Large Teak Burl Wood Bowl, East Java or Madura, 18th/19th Century

About the Item

A beautiful bowl, originally a musical frame drum called Terbang, which was used in ecstatic devotional music. The drum was hewn from a single piece of teak burl wood, one of the rarest and most water resistant woods in the world. Repairs and patches were applied to enable its use as a frame drum. Later a piece was added to the small hole, (which allowed the sound to escape), at the bottom of the drum to form a bowl.
