Vietnamese Celadon Lotus Vessel, Ly or Tran Dynasty, 13th/14th Century, Vietnam

Located in Austin, TX

An unusually large Vietnamese celadon glazed stoneware bowl with carved lotus petal design, Ly or Tran Dynasty, 13th - 14th century, Vietnam. The large bowl or offering vessel of generous proportions, rising on a short, unglazed foot ring, revealing the reddish buff stoneware body. The globular body elegantly tapered. The lower section deeply carved with a traditional stylized lotus petal design, a band of incised lines above. The upper section of the vessel ribbed, and carved with long, elegant lotus petals that taper upwards, terminating in rounded ends. Another band of incised lines circumscribe the mouth. The vessel glazed in a wonderful olive celadon glaze. The glaze stopping neatly at the mouth rim. The transparent celadon glaze thinning slightly along the raised sections, and pooling in the recesses, adding additional depth and texture. The celadon with wonderful yellow undertones, giving an overall olive hue. The vase features a slender neck adorned with gracefully drawn, elongated leaves that blend seamlessly with its natural curves, adding a refined elegance. At the center, a meticulously rendered geometric pattern of repeating wave-like motifs creates a sense of depth and movement, framed by curved lines for balance. Simple plant motifs are scattered throughout, complementing the design with minimal strokes. The base is grounded by repeated geometric symbols, ensuring stability and cohesion. This Annamese ceramic plate features a central floral motif rendered in underglaze blue, complemented by delicate green-painted leaves—an innovative characteristic of Annamese ceramics of the time. The rim is adorned with swirling cloud patterns and additional stylized floral designs. The use of green overpainting, a distinctive element in Annamese ceramics, parallels similar examples documented in The Age of Discovery: Asian Ceramics Found Along the Maritime Silk Road, particularly on pages 59, 64, and 66 of the Annamese ship catalog. Such pieces were widely traded along the Maritime Silk Road, showcasing the rich cultural exchange between Vietnam and other regions. 17th Century Southeast Asian Bronze Tobacco Pipe — Tay Nguyen Plateau, Vietnam A rare 17th-century bronze tobacco pipe unearthed in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, near the Cambodian border on the Tay Nguyen Plateau. Attributed to the Montagnard (Jarai) hill tribes, this piece dates to the 17th century or possibly earlier. The pipe features a bronze bowl with a short, curved stem that once accommodated an elongated reed or bamboo mouthpiece. Its elegant, angular form reflects both indigenous craftsmanship and subtle Chinese design influences. The surface exhibits a rich, natural patina developed over centuries, enhancing its sculptural presence and authenticity. This artifact represents a transitional moment in Southeast Asian material culture — when traditional highland utility met emerging trade influences from neighboring regions. Mounted on a custom steel display base, it reads as both an archaeological relic and a minimalist bronze sculpture...
