A large part of what makes this example so very rare is not just the age and condition, but the saint depicted, San Roque.
The Hispano-Philippine (Spanish-Filipinos) hand carved hard wood religious altar figure presents splendidly, with scattered remnants of original gesso and polychrome pigments, the exceptionally sculpted religious folk art depicting San Roque (Saint Roch or Rocco), the 14th century Catholic patron saint frequently invoked against the plaque, various infectious disease, as well as patron saint of dogs, invalids, of falsely accused people, and of bachelors, amongst others.
Provenance / Acquisition:
Retaining registration - identification label to verso from The Republic of the Philippines (RP) National Museum of the Philippines Manila with hand written registration number.
Acquired from highly reputable auction house, Austin Auction Gallery, est. 1982, Austin, Texas. February 2022 catalog.

Great original antique condition, especially considering it's around 350 years old. Nicely aged patina over the whole. Presented on a later wood plinth base. Typical loss to right arm, minor finish losses, old tiny metal plate added to prevent age related splitting, all wear consistent with age, and only adds to the overall sophisticated character, authenticity, and charming rustic warmth that can only be acquired over long periods of time.

Chinese provincial porcelain trumpet form vase on a flaring foot. This diminutively scaled vase is decorated fully in the round in cobalt under glaze blue with blooming peony bough and a magpie fluttering on a branch. This vignette bears auspicious symbols for beauty, wealth and joy. The peony is the queen of all flowers in China and it symbolizes wealth and beauty. The magpie is a harbinger of happiness, thus its name "bird of happiness."
There is a tiny ding on the flared mouth rim and also on the foot ring. The dark spots of various sizes represent ashes that landed on the glaze in the firing process which supports the age of the vase when all porcelain objects were stacked high and fired in a wood kiln.

The Jar/ Vase is fairly thickly potted with a very white glaze to the porcelain.
It is decorated with a man and a boy stood against a tree with rocks, mountains and flying bats in the background all hand painted in various shades of a clear under-glaze cobalt blue. Immediately above the forehead, in correspondence with the anterior neonatal fontanel, the CHRISMON is painted in purple red. The monogram of Christ or Chi Rho (or CHRISMON) is a combination of letters from the Greek alphabet, which form an abbreviation of the name of Christ. Solar in nature, often inscribed in a circle with multiple rays reminiscent of the cosmic wheel deriving from the ancient solar emblems of Egypt. The symbol consists of two large overlapping letters, the 'X' and the 'P'. They correspond, respectively, to the Greek letter '?' ('chi', which reads kh, aspirated) and '?' ('rho', which reads r).
