Steel Engraved Nuremberg Money Chest or Cash Box circa 1600

About the Item

A fine example of a money chest or cash box with steel engraved figures on each side and an intricate locking mechanism under the lid, typical of metalwork coming out of a host of cities in southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, renowned for their craftsmanship, especially Augsburg and Nuremberg. In Nuremberg alone, there were over 140 crafts registered at the end of the fifteenth century, including skilled blacksmiths, along with equally skilled colleagues in specialties such as sheet metalworking, etching, hammered inlay, steel-plate engraving, painting and rustproofing. This box is in very good condition, beautifully detailed with figures on all sides, with chasing even found on the underside of the lid behind the working lock mechanism, and its ball feet have remained intact. Some light rust patina appears on the top, and other minor imperfections, light edge and corner wear commensurate with age and use. One corner of the lid shows a cut loss. Key is included. A great rare piece of early European craftsmanship! Dimensions: 5 in H x 8.5 in W x 4.25 in D. Ref: 787
