African Tribal Statue Osseyba or Reliquary Figure Kota Mohongwe Peoples Art

A fantastically hand-crafted piece by the Kota (or Bakota) tribe who are located in the northeastern region of Gabon. This figure, which is a Mahongwe reliquary figure as exhibited with its truncated almond-shaped face, is made of wound copper, hammered brass and wood. Reliquary figures were used as guardians to protect the revered bones of venerated family ancestors and leaders and ward off unwanted spirits. These figures are meant to embody intense powers and were also commonly used in communal rites and ritual performances.
This particular piece came from an American collector who traveled the African continent and collected African artifacts for over 50 years. This piece has a beautiful, organically aged patina acquired naturally over time and use. It is mounted on a custom wooden display stand. We believe it dates back to the early to mid-1900s but could be older. We are listing as 20th century because we did not have it appraised.
This African Tribal Statue Osseyba or Reliquary Figure Kota (Bakota) Mohongwe Peoples decorative art would clearly stand out as part of a collection or by itself in any setting. Truly unique, eye-catching and engaging.

Silas Seandel was born in New York City, August 11, 1937. He studied sculpture and economics at the University of Pennsylvania and was graduated in 1959. He opened his studio in 1963.
While Mr. Seandel was working on a collection for a one man show, he was commissioned by an architect to create a wall sculpture for a building under construction. Mr. Seandel has been working almost exclusively for architects, interior designers and engineers ever since.
His pieces are all handmade in the Silas Seandel studio and executed in solid metals such as brass, bronze, steel, copper, etc. These are no enamels, no veneers, nothing unnatural. All colors are the results of acids and heat treatments which Mr. Seandel has developed.
As far as craftsmanship is concerned, Sherman Emery, past Editor of Interior Design Magazine said it best. "I have been a long-time admirer of the work of Silas Seandel and consider him to be one of the finest artist-craftsman on the American scene today. This sculpture is published in an original 'Forme e Superfici catalog' and the January 1971 issue of the renowned italian design periodical 'Interni-La rivista dell Arredamento'. The central disc features a beautiful abstract hand crafted sculptural relief motif on metal , probably zinc, which is illuminated by a hidden fluorescent tube light. The frame surrounding the central sculptural disc is finished in stove enameled steel over a wood structure and features copper detailing.
One of Nerone and Patuzzi's best known works is the enormous , 150 square metre, bas relief in zinc that they created in 1972 for the 'hemicycle' of the then new 'Schulman' building (1973) in Luxembourg which housed the early meetings of the European Parliament . The hemicycle was beautifully decorated following a project by the architect Simonis, combining different materials (leather, wood, metal) in a geometrical harmony, the whole integrated by Nerone and Patuzzi's huge zinc bas-relief on the rear wall. The zinc models were engraved using an etching technique, representing geometrical and abstract figures, and mounted on a surface of 150 square metres. The bas-relief was considered at the time to be the biggest sculpture in metal of the world.
