From the 1912 Vanderbilt Hotel in New York City, Manhattan, located on Park Ave. In the 20th century, the hotel business declined, and the Vanderbilt Hotel suffered foreclosure in 1935 during the Great Depression. In 1966, an investment group purchased the 54-year old structure with intentions of renovating it into a dual function office and apartment building. The top 18 floors would become studio and one-bedroom apartments while the lower floors would be offices and commercial space. “New aluminum-and-glass curtain walls are being erected to sheath the office floors, while the masonry façade of the hotel will be retained on the upper stories,” said one article. But that was just the beginning of the brutality. Penthouse apartments were being constructed on the roof, but the view was obstructed by the terracotta parapet and its massive sculptures. American (19/20th Cent) small bronze bust in relief of Native American Chief

This is a white glazed and black clay raku fired ceramic bust. Though modern, this sculpture references Classical Greek and Roman antiquities. A subtle red glaze is used on the lips and the artist has purposefully and mysteriously left a portion around the neck between the head and the chest free of glaze, exposing the black clay beneath. A large striking bronze bust sculpture of a man with the likeness of Will Rogers. This piece was created by Leonard McMurry, also known as Oklahoma’s “Michelangelo”. It stands on a green marbled stone square base. The sculpture depicts a man, with an extreme likeness to Will Rogers. The man has combed hair, which is parted to one side. The sculpted bronze bust has a fabulous patina, and the square green stone it is affixed to is marbled with fantastic greens, blacks, and creams. About the Artist: Leonard McMurry, (1913–2008) - McMurry is best known for his bronzes, which are primarily figurative, in many venues, from Oklahoma City to St. Louis to New York City. In 1941 his work received Honorable Mention in the Prix de Rome competition. In 1952 his work was included in the National Sculpture Society show in New York. Among his works in Oklahoma are The 89er, at the Oklahoma City Civic Center, The Legend of the Great Westerner (informally called "Buffalo Bill") at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and Healing Hands, at the City of Faith Hospital/Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. (which at the time was the largest casting in the world.) For the 1982 Diamond Jubilee of Oklahoma statehood, McMurry completed a series of twenty-one busts of Oklahoma's governors. He also created fourteen busts for the National Hall of Fame for American Indians in Anadarko. Leonard McMurry died in 2008.
