Early 20th Century Art Deco Gilt Bronze Sculpture "Isis" by Claire Colinet
Located in London, GB
An exquisite early 20th Century French Art Deco gilt bronze figure of a young female dancer seated upon a shawl that she is lifting either side of her. The surface decorated with enamel painted ancient Egyptian design, exhibiting excellent colour and detail. Raised on a marble base and signed Cl.J.R.Colinet ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 42 cm Width: 56 cm Depth: 21 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1925 Materials: Bronze & Marble Book Ref: Art Deco & Other Figures by Bryan Catley Page: 117 SKU: 9176 ABOUT Colinet Claire Jeanne Roberte Colinet (1880–1950) was French sculptor of Belgian birth who worked during the early-to-mid 20th century. The subject matter of her best known work was primarily Arab female dancers. The majority of her career output in sculpture can be classified as being of the Art Deco style. Colinet was a frequent exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Francais and Salon des Independents art exhibitions in Paris. Her sculptures, most of which depicted beautifully figured, energized, and dramatic female forms, were exhibited posthumously at the Paris Salon for nearly 30 years. Early Life Colinet was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1880. Little is known about her life other than the artwork she produced during a successful career that spanned more than 40 years. As a woman, she was in the minority in her chosen field of sculpture during the era in which she worked and lived. Career At an undetermined date – probably around 1910 – Colinet emigrated to Paris, France, where she studied sculpture under the watchful eye of Jef Lambeaux and exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1913 and became a permanent member of the organization in 1929. From 1937 to 1940, she exhibited at the Salon des Independents in Paris and joined the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors. Colinet's work is primarily done in the Art Deco style, and her models included odalisques, exotic dancers, jugglers and artists of cabaret. A number of her female dancer pieces were influenced by a revival of the Orientalism movement which had been popular in Europe from about 1860 to 1880. Her preferred casting material was bronze; however, a number of her most distinguished sculptures are chryselephantine, being a combination of both bronze and ivory. Colinet's sculpture has become highly desirable to collectors and, increasingly, is selling for exorbitant sums. At a Christie's sale on 4 May 2007, her Ankara Dancer...

18th Century Spanish Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception, Handcrafted Sculpture
Located in Madrid, ES
Completely hand-crafted in 18th century Spain, this sculpture of the Virgin stands 1.5 meters / 5 feet tall and was most certainly created for devotional purposes, to be displayed in a church or chapel. Besides its impressive size this sculpture is an excellent, museum-quality example of the Spanish “Estofado” polychrome technique, developed during the Gothic period to imitate rich brocade fabrics. The finely carved “fabric” areas of the sculpture would be first covered in gesso, and then a layer of gold leaf would be applied. The gold leaf would then be painted over with various colors of tempera paints. Once dry, the painted surface would be incised or scratched away in patterns, revealing the gold beneath. The sculpture was professionally restored in 2022 by a firm that is often hired by the Spanish government to work on historic building interiors and museum pieces. The virgin was carefully cleaned, repaired and its condition stabilized. A complete and fully-illustrated restoration report will be included with purchase. Often confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, the belief that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself was conceived “immaculately” without original sin has been variously defended and debated within the Catholic Church since the pre-Middle Ages. For centuries, artists struggled to create an acceptable visual representation of this highly abstract concept, in part taking inspiration from the Book of Revelation and other scriptural sources. We see the Virgin standing on a half moon (biblically inspired, though also an ancient symbol of chastity) with her long natural hair loose down her back, another indication of purity. Both her white tunic and flowing blue mantle...

Pair of Very Large Floral Rococo-style Meissen Potpourri Vases
Located in London, GB
Pair of very large floral Rococo-style Meissen potpourri vases German, Late 19th Century Height 89cm, width 44cm, depth 33cm These charming vases were manufactured by Meissen, Europe’s oldest porcelain manufactory. Each feature impressive floral and figurative design representational of the best of German porcelain wares. The pieces are topped by richly ornamented lids. Surmounted by extensively applied three-dimensional flowers and greenery, the designs create the illusion of a real flower bouquet. Below the flower bunch, the porcelain base is revealed. Decorated with rocaille motifs and coloured in pale blue, pink and shining gold, the pierced detailing enables the easy diffusion of potpourri scent. Rococo style genre scenes adorn the baluster-shaped body of each vase. Set in a woodland, the intricate paintings portray figures dressed in typical 18th century garments. On the second vase, a couple is joined by a lady in a reclined position holding a basket full of flowers. A pair of twin pale blue rocaille-shaped handles are mounted on both sides of the vases. Richly decorated with butterflies, roses, carnations and sweet peas, the design is completed with delicate floral composition on the white porcelain ground. Below the handles, a brown-haired winged putto is seen reaching towards the front. The bright blue cloth covering parts of his body stands out against his soft, pale skin. The base of the vases is shaped with further rocaille forms, the detailing highlighted in gilt. A large female figure, in a similar position to the putto, reaches forward holding a basket of flowers. The flower types are identical to the larger mounts on other parts of the vases, demonstrating the makers' exquisite skill to make intricate porcelain details in various forms, shapes and sizes while maintaining their real-life appearance. Both vases stand on porcelain stands, supported on four scrolled feet. Each is decorated with yellow, orange, blue, cream, red and purple flowers. The sides are painted with Rococo style genre scenes and floral bouquets. The pieces are marked with the blue crossed sword mark and incised ‘B.C’. Including both naturalistic and figurative ornaments, these stunning Meissen porcelain potpourri vases...

Totemic Head Sculpture Unsigned by Jencik, Melbourne, 1998
By Paul Jencik
Located in Melbourne, AU
Another wonderful marble sculpture with an intriguing provenance. Unsigned. Part of a series by Paul Jencik, circa 1998-2001. This ‘totemic head’ sculpture is carved from a single block of marble in a snowy white. It’s the remaining head from a much larger totemic sculpture, the base now lost. This figurative face can be interpreted in many ways. Jencik references human, animal and natural forms but never quite allows us to reach a conclusion about the origins of his creations. Jencik was a welder, boat builder and metal worker with a strong creative instinct but without the opportunity or artistic training that would afford his work any recognition. He created a large series of marble and timber sculptures...
