Hukin & Heath (active 1855 – 1953) Hukin & Heath was an important British manufacturer, active between 1855 and 1953, specializing in silver and electroplate. The company is best known for its skillfully manufactured reproductions of Persian and Japanese pieces, mainly silver and electroplated wares, that were produced under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Dresser. The production of the Hukin & Heath eastern-like pieces experienced its peak between the 1870s and 1880s. The business was established in 1855 by Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath. The company entered the market as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. The company’s silver mark was entered in 1875 in the Birmingham Assay Office, which was followed by the entry of the mark of the firm’s founders, Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath, in 1879 in the London Assay Office. By that time, Hukin & Heath already had several showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, Holborn, and a workshop at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham. As for the company’s trade mark, it combines the initials H & H, standing for Hukin & Heath, that is accompanied by an eagle. The Podstakannik (Russian: подстака́нник, literally "thing under the glass"), or tea glass holder, is a holder with a handle, made of silver plate that holds a drinking glass (stakan). Their primary purpose is to be able to hold a very hot glass of tea, which is usually consumed right after it is brewed. The stability of the glass on the table is also significantly improved. It is a traditional way of serving and drinking tea in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and other Slavic states. History Podstakanniks appeared in Russian tea culture in the late 18th century, when drinking tea became common in Russia. Very soon they became not just practical utensils, but also works of art, just like samovars that were used for boiling water. Expensive podstakanniks for the rich and the elite were made of silver; however, they were not very practical, since they would get quite hot very quickly due to the high thermal conductivity of silver. By the 20th century, podstakanniks became very widespread. They were found extremely useful on railroads, as tea was served in moving carriages that were shaking. A bare glass was more likely to fall, scalding people with hot tea. The Russian railroads still use the podstakannik extensively in sleeper carriages. Production In the Soviet Union they were made mostly from nickel silver, cupronickel, and other alloys with nickel, silver, or gold plating. Though in modern times, simple tea cups or mugs are typically used by Russians at home, podstakanniks continue to be widely used for serving tea on the Russian Railways, since they provide more safety while drinking or carrying tea on a moving train. Beautifully detailed with textured top, the stirrup cup adorned with a cast stag head on its base, banded center and semi-gloss bottom. Playful stirrup cup from the 1970s in the style of Gucci. They balance with the animal heads up or down and can just be used as decorative objects if desired. This Classic Elizabeth II style stirrup cup, is of plain beaker form with a cast stag head to one end. Can be displayed as pictured or with the cup upside down, resting on the stag's antlers. In the early 19th century, stirrup cups were originally used as a vessel to hold a drink offered to a man on horseback before a hunting departure.
