French Medieval Style Silver Jewelry Box, circa 1880
Located in Miami, FL
A remarkable intricately designed, handcrafted silver box, circa 1880s. We were told that this box is sterling silver and that the makers mark "M" is that of "M. Mayer". Maurice MAYER was a very prestigious silversmith. Research shows that he was an "Orfèvre de l'Empereur", Napoleon Bonaparte, 1860-1870. The Minerva hallmarks are not visible, may have been rubbed off from use and cleaning. No documentation. This intricately carved box depicts the romantic poem of Le Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose). Comes with the original lock and key. Le Roman de la Rose, begun by Guillaume de Lorris circa 1230 and completed, in a different style, circa 1270-1280, by Jean de Meun, builds on the concept of courtly love found in the poetry of the troubadours. The authors create a complex allegory of the romance between the Lover and the Rose. In the quest to pick the Rose (to achieve the conquest of love), the flower and its attendants represent the Lady and her sentiments while being wooed. In the first part of the poem, written by de Lorris, the Lover recounts his dream, ending with the winning of a kiss from the Lady. In the dream, the Lover discovers a walled garden and gains entrance thanks to a beautiful young woman. He meets Diversion and dancers who represent courtly values such as Beauty and Generosity. A tour of the garden brings him to a beautiful bed of roses by the Fountain of Love...

Dimensions in cm: Height 92 x Width 4 x Depth 4 Dimensions in inches: Height 3 foot x Width 2 inches x Depth 2 inches Georg Adam Scheid History And Heritage The imposing building shown above was once the premises of Georg Adam Scheid. The premises located at 85 Gumpendorfer Straße, Vienna, were built in 1808 by Jakob Hainz. In 1830 expansion of this building took place followed by a complete redesign by Johann Philipp Theiss and Johann Sturany which lasted from 1881 - 1884, transforming the place into a palace - a Baroque palace with a gabled central projection, baroque window decor and an elaborate wrought-iron balcony. Georg Adam Scheid was born on July 28 1838 in Schönau Baden, Germany. When he was sixteen years old he began an apprenticeship. During this time he worked in both Pforzheim and Stuttgart. Pforzheim is famous as a center of jewellery making - so much so that it is known colloquially as Goldstadt (Golden City). In 1858 he travelled to Vienna to work for the goldsmith Michael Markowitsch. Markowitsch was impressed enough to partner with Scheid in 1862, when the firm was renamed Markowitsch & Scheid. Scheid also married one of Michael’s daughters. In recognition of the partnership a new mark was struck, as shown above. When Markowitsch and Scheid ended their partnership it was convenient for the Markowitsch family to keep this mark, as it was ideal for Michael Markowitsch & Son. His son, Adolf, followed him into business. Adolf was to go on to own the firm Markowitsch & Scheid. The company ceased trading in 1898. On leaving the partnership Scheid moved next door to 85 Gumpendorfer Straße. His firm was known as G. A. Scheid. The venture was so successful that up to three hundred workers were employed at their manufacturing premises. An enamel, silver gilt and rock crystal seal...
