Napoleon III Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass

NAPOLEON III STYLE

Under Napoleon III’s rule, Paris underwent a great rebuilding overseen by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, which created grand avenues and lavish landmarks like the Paris Opera. Antique Napoleon III–style furniture was flamboyant and eclectic. It was also known as Second Empire style since it followed and referenced the Empire style of his uncle Napoleon I.

Developing from 1852–70, Napoleon III furniture was plush and ornate, matching the fashion for masked balls and socializing in salons. It borrowed freely from earlier French styles including Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI as well as aesthetics from around the world, from antiquity to Asian art. As writer Gustave Claudin remarked in 1867, the country’s architects worked in “a style which one would be tempted to call neo-Greco-Gothico-Pompadour-Pompeian.”

Napoleon III chairs were completely covered with velvet and lined with tassels; pouf footstools invited people to put up their feet. Sofas were upholstered with tapestries, and beds were adorned with gilt bronze and theatrical canopies. The addition of conservatories to homes led to new indoor-outdoor furniture, while the spirit of hygiene promoted by Baron Haussmann inspired bright, floral motifs.

Although the most ostentatious designs were for the elite, as seen in the Napoleon III apartments preserved in the Louvre, where red velvet, gilding and chandeliers create a cacophony of luxury, these trends influenced homes across classes as manufacturing made design increasingly accessible. Papier-mâché furniture allowed for elaborate shapes that would have been difficult to carve in wood. The malleable material was painted with chinoiserie patterns and decorative designs. It was mass-produced by factories such as Jennens and Bettridge with varnishing and mother-of-pearl inlays creating an effect reminiscent of Asian lacquer. (Surfaces that had been “japanned” — a specialty of Jennens and Bettridge — were intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia.)

French Napoleon III Period Ebonized Crystal Cave a Liqueur Service Set
Located in Forney, TX
A charming period Napoleon III Second Empire (1852-1870) brass accented ebonized wood and crystal French cave à liqueur. France, mid-19th century, an object of practical use as well as beauty, add a touch of sophisticated elegance and refinement to your next dinner party with this scarce antique cave à liqueur (petite liquour caddy), featuring an ebonized wooden box-form case inlaid with brass string banding, the locking case opens by turning the original key to release the latch lock mechanism then gently lifting the hinged top and front panel, revealing a richly figured mahogany fitted interior, housing a lovely assembled etched crystal liqueur service, including a pair of hand blown crystal decanters decorated in elegant flowing fiolate vine etchings with matching stoppers, accompanied by eight stemmed cordial drinking glasses with geometric etching patern; the folding panels can stay in the up/open position when in use or for display, or press the hinge mechanism to close the panels, then you can lock it and remove the key to secure the contents, the case is finished on all sides so it can be placed anywhere in the room, all raised on short turned feet. circa 1860 Dimensions: (approx) Closed: 10" High, 8.25" Wide, 7 7/8" Deep; Open: 15.25" High, 8.25" Wide, 10" Deep; 5.5lbs Total **Additional photos available upon request** CONDITION REPORT: Good antique condition with nicely aged warm worn patina and desirable unrestored original finish. Wear consistent with 160 years of age, use, handling and exposure, including retaining antique character marks and charm throughout, worn distressed original ebony finish, with scattered nicks, scuffs, scratches, rough spots and very minor chippy paint losses. The imperfections not noticeable in most lighting or at most angles, however we went way out of our way to make sure to capture the flaws in the photos to try and be as transparent and upfront as possible. Please be sure to inspect all the photos. Overall a wonderful assembled set, sturdy, stable, structurally sound, all crystal intact with typical wear but no cracks or damage. Overall a wonderful example, with nothing that detracts from the aesthetics or functionality but only adds to the sophisticated elegance, warmth, antique character, classic refinement, and rich historical depth that can only be acquired over very long periods of time! Jerome Massier Fils, Majolica Platter, Vallauris, End 19th C.
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
French Napoleon III majolica slip aperitive or dessert set by Jerome MASSIER, Vallauris, France, end of 19th century. 6 (2x3) plates : anemone, pansy and daisy - Diameter : 7.5"(19cm). 1 platter with the three same flowers - Height : 3"(7.5cm), Diameter : 13"(33cm). Platter and plates (except one) are intaglio stamped. "J.Massier Vallauris" (platter), "Jerome Massier Vallauris" (4 plates) "Jerome Massier Fils Vallauris AM" (1 plate). Excellent original condition (an original crack in the firing on a plate, see last photo). The Massiers’ work represents a link between traditional Victorian majolica and Art Nouveau pottery. There were three Massiers working in the second half of the nineteenth century, heirs to an old line of potters, who transformed traditional utilitarian ceramics into an art form. Their ancestors had worked for several centuries in Vallauris on the French Riviera, where, in the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso was reigning ceramic artist. Delphin Massier (1836 - 1907), and Clément (1845 -1917) were brothers. A cousin, Jérome (1850 – 1916) worked with them, using the signature « Jérome Massier fils ». By 1899 the family firm was divided into branches headed by these three men. In 1860 the Massiers began to produce their vibrantly colored majolica, perhaps inspired by the flowers of the Cote d’Azur. Clément was particularly interested in designs drawn from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as from Renaissance maiolica...

The history of silver-smithing in France is rich and illustrious, and many prominent firms have contributed to its legacy. Among these, Bloch & Eschwege stands out as an exemplar of craftsmanship, innovation, and artistic excellence. Founded in the 19th century, this renowned silversmith firm has left an indelible mark on the world of decorative arts. Bloch & Eschwege was established in the mid-19th century by two remarkable artisans, Joseph-Alexandre Bloch and Emile-Robert Eschwege. Both men were passionate about the art of silver-smithing, and their partnership laid the foundation for a firm that would set new standards of excellence in the craft. Joseph-Alexandre Bloch was born in 1828 in the heart of Paris, a city renowned for its artistic heritage. As a young man, Bloch exhibited an exceptional talent for metalwork, earning an apprenticeship with a prominent Parisian silversmith. This experience provided him with valuable training in the art of working with silver and other precious metals. Bloch's dedication and skill earned him recognition in the silversmithing community, setting the stage for his future partnership with Eschwege. Emile-Robert Eschwege, born in 1832, hailed from a family of skilled metalworkers. His upbringing was steeped in the traditions of silver-smithing, and he showed a remarkable aptitude for the craft from a young age. Eschwege's family background and his own determination to master the art of silver-smithing made him a formidable candidate to join forces with Bloch. In 1855, Bloch and Eschwege joined hands to establish their silversmith firm in Paris. Their partnership was not only rooted in a shared passion for the craft but also a vision to create exceptional pieces that would capture the essence of French artistic expression. The early works of Bloch & Eschwege were characterized by a fusion of traditional silversmithing techniques and innovative designs. Their creations included intricately designed flatware, tableware, and decorative pieces that showcased their mastery over silver, gold, and other precious metals. Their creations soon gained recognition among the elite of Parisian society, attracting a growing client base. Bloch & Eschwege's reputation grew rapidly due to their dedication to artistic excellence and innovation. The firm's artisans continuously pushed the boundaries of silver-smithing, employing novel techniques and materials to create one-of-a-kind pieces. As Bloch & Eschwege's reputation continued to grow, they attracted the attention of European royalty and aristocracy. Their works found their way into the homes of kings, queens, and nobles, solidifying their status as one of the premier silversmith firms in Europe. The firm's most prestigious commissions came from members of the French royal family, including Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. These commissions included exquisite pieces such as ornate candelabras, intricately designed tea sets, and opulent dining services. Bloch & Eschwege's creations not only adorned the palaces of the Tuileries and Compiègne but also graced the tables of state banquets and diplomatic events. Bloch & Eschwege's works were showcased at various international exhibitions, earning them accolades and awards.
