This one-of-a-kind organic modern ceramic table lamp is hand-built in high-fired stoneware in Detroit and produced as a unique work in 2024. Rooted in contemporary design and architectural restraint, the form explores planar geometry, angle, and structural balance through controlled illumination. The silhouette is defined by a decisive wedge profile — a clean angular mass that feels both grounded and directional. The geometry creates tension between incline and stability, giving the piece a forward presence without excess ornament. It reads as resolved and architectural rather than expressive. High-fired for durability and material depth, the glaze responds naturally to planes and edges, emphasizing transitions and surface variation unique to this work. In daylight, the piece functions as a sculptural object defined by its angled profile. A linen shade crowns the ceramic base, allowing light to radiate upward and outward while softly activating the faceted form below. This one-of-a-kind organic modern ceramic table lamp is hand-built in high-fired stoneware in Detroit and produced as a unique work in 2024. Rooted in contemporary design and architectural restraint, the form translates branching desert structure into sculptural illumination. Cactus Lamp 1 introduces the vertical rhythm that defines the series. Articulated ceramic projections rise from a grounded base, creating a composition that balances organic reference with structural clarity. The silhouette remains disciplined and resolved — abstraction over literal interpretation. Illumination emerges from the terminal bulbs positioned at the ends of the branching forms, allowing light to radiate outward and define the perimeter of the structure. The exposed bulbs activate negative space and reinforce the architectural line of the piece. High-fired for permanence and material depth, the ceramic body carries subtle tonal variation unique to this work. In daylight, the lamp reads as sculptural object. ALAN WALLWORK (1931-2019 ) : ORGANIC STONEWARE TABLET LAMP WITH IMPRESSED & INCISED DECORATION, 1960-5 Exhibiting the articulated, inventive, organic qualities & tacticity of Wallwork’s early oeuvre for which he is best known This sculptural landscape vessel has been handmade by coiling, slabbing and shaping the clay. The totemic form and pitted and pierced surfaces draw on the abstract landscape and tacticity of elements in nature. Matt glazes and oxides have been skillfully used to enhance the rich textures of the surfaces and the organic aesthetic. Wallwork is one of the great individualists in British pottery, developing an archetypal language that echoed some of the wider artistic obsessions of that period, what the art critic Herbert Read called the “postwar ferment” of sculptural activity.
