17th century Crucifix Measures: Boxwood, 42 cm high x 8 x 14 The sculpture depicting the crucified Christ examined here represents a refined example of seventeenth-century cabinetry in boxwood. The figure of Christ, now dead on the cross, is part of a precious artistic choreography with the structure of the cross and its pedestal, both decorated with tortoiseshell mirrors, ivory threads to emphasize the structure of the cross and elements in ebonized and carved wood to highlight the architectural structure of the pedestal. The departure of Christ is evident from the lowered head, from the open hands...

Hand-Carved Boxwood Calvary Sculpture, Spain, 17th Century
Hand-Carved Boxwood Calvary Sculpture, Spain, 17th Century

Hand-Carved Boxwood Calvary Sculpture, Spain, 17th Century

Located in Madrid, ES

This hand-crafted Calvary sculpture was produced in Spain during the 17th century and is carved entirely from boxwood. The piece depicts the traditional Calvary scene, representing Christ crucified on Mount Golgotha, a subject widely interpreted in Spanish religious art of the period. Boxwood was a favored material for devotional sculptures due to its density, fine grain, and ability to hold highly detailed carving. The sculpture is executed with careful attention to proportion and anatomical detail, reflecting the devotional and didactic purpose of such works. The compact scale and refined carving suggest it was intended for private worship, a chapel setting, or ecclesiastical use, rather than large-scale architectural display. The use of boxwood allows for crisp detailing, particularly in facial features, drapery, and the structure of the cross. Calvary representations played a central role in early modern Catholic iconography, serving as visual tools for meditation and reflection. This example reflects the craftsmanship and religious sensibility characteristic of 17th-century Spanish carving traditions. The sculpture remains a strong historical object, valued for its material quality, traditional iconography, and artisanal execution. It stands as both a devotional artifact and a collectible example of early Spanish religious sculpture.

Two Antique Carved Wooden Moulds Ex, Tucker Collection

Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire

A pair of mounted antique carved wooden moulds from the Tucker collection. This pair is one of many moulds we are selling from this vast collection assembled by British make-up artist, Christopher Tucker. Dating from the late 18th to mid 19th centuries, these wooden moulds are exceptionally hand carved by talented Victorian artisans, their elaborate details originally used to cast details in composition for the frames of pictures and paintings. This set is inscribed with design number 8546 and features beautiful scrolling and foliage deeply carved into the wood. This results in a highly ornate and precise compo embellishment that appears as though it has been carved rather than cast. Each wooden mould comes with an accompanying custom-made steel display stand. Christopher Tucker (1941-2022) was an award-winning British make-up artist, specialising in prosthetics for theatre and film...
