Cotswold School Walnut Arts & Crafts Hand Mirror

About the Item

A Cotswold School walnut hand mirror. English - Circa 1950. Attributed to Hugh Birkett. The mirror is decorated with chip carving to the edge, with contrasting boxwood detail. There are some foxing marks to the mirror. It has been waxed and has a smooth feel. There is a minute hairline at the top, as shown in the last photograph. The Cotswold School was a development of the Arts and Craft Movement started largely by Ernest Gimson and the brothers Sidney and Ernest Barnsley. The furniture is instantly recognisable with its simple lines, attention to the finest of details, and use of beautiful materials. Cotswold School designs were crafted from local materials using traditional tools and techniques. Decorative details were added they generally took the form of traditional embellishment of the sort; the long chamfers, chip carved edge details.

  • Dutch Arts & Crafts Hand Hammered Copper Oval Wall Mirror of Practical Size 1910
    By Conrad Fehn
    Located in Lisse, NL
Early 1900s artistic design Arts & Crafts wall mirror. This all-handcrafted, practical size Arts & Crafts antique with its original mirror is an absolute joy to own and look at. The unusual and attractive asymmetrical design of the embossed decoration at the bottom makes this hand hammered copper specimen stand out from anything we ever saw. The hand-crafted out of one piece of copper frame has an aesthetic beauty that you either see and recognize or you don't. There usually is no gray area and somehow the creators and the people who loved and bought (and still buy) those creations have something in common that is hard to put into words. We believe it has to do with a certain level of consciousness. The combination of the unique design and the marvelous patina of the beautiful copper AND the superb condition of the original mirror, makes this an absolute gem to come home to. By the way, the original mirror is in such remarkable condition, also, thanks to the zinc back plate. The zinc has protected the back of the mirror from corroding. On the zinc backplate of this mirror is the sticker of the French art dealer who offered this rare Arts and Crafts mirror to his undoubtedly well-to-do 'clientele' If you like this unique and completely original Dutch Arts and Crafts mirror (in the manner of Conrad Fehn...
