An impressionist at the Chiemsee
The painterly mood content, which the artist Alfred Schmidt captured in countless variations on the canvas, occupies such an eminent and substantial position that it is inextricably linked to his oeuvre. “[…] Female creatures walking in the shimmering air […]”(1), who find their pleasure in the warm, golden tones of summer and the grey-silver shimmering water surface of the lake, correspond to the characteristic motif of the native of Dresden. One is inevitably reminded of the impressionist Christian Landenberger (1862-1927), to whom Schmidt was a friend and who painted canvas on canvas at Lake Ammersee, but “[…] softer, sweeter and more narrative, because he [Schmidt] often expands on that Nature and the human body come together to create a small, genre-like idyll”(2).
His art is a commitment to plein air painting. He openly displays his impressionistic impetus. The originally anecdotal aspects of his painting, which he had experienced at the Karlsruhe Academy from 1886 to 1893, he gradually put aside both through the one-year study visit to Paris and Brittany in 1889 and through the influence of Landenberger and Swabian landscape painting. From this point onwards, artistic development is hardly noticeable. He had found his individual style and stuck to it.
At the end of 1899, Schmidt came to the Swabian capital from Karlsruhe in the entourage of Leopold Graf von Kalckreuth (1855-1922), who was appointed to the Stuttgart Academy with Carlos Grethe (1864-1913) and Robert Poetzelberger...

The painting, of beautiful pictorial quality, depicts the biblical scene of Lot and his daughters, with Sodom set on fire in the background, and is stylistically attributable to the italian painter Giuseppe Gambarini (Italy, Bologna, 17 March 1680 - Casalecchio di Reno, 11 September 1725).
The canvas shows in the center Lot sitting and already drunk, depicted according to traditional iconography, old, gray and with long gray boat. With his left hand he grabs the wine flask that one of his daughters offers him. She is depicted kneeling and resting on large boulders of stone, described as an architectural base, dressed in a voluminous deep blue mantle, her hair covered with a humble headdress made of a knotted cloth; look at the viewer, as if to want to involve him directly in the scene. The other daughter is described on the left, from the back to the observer, with a bare back and dark hair gathered by a red ribbon. She too is intent on serving her father a cup in which to pour the wine. Around them a duck placed on a cloth, some bread and another wine flask enrich the composition describing a banquet in progress. The scene is set outdoors, where only a large tent supported by branches arranged in a hut serves as a shelter to the figures. This rare intimist scene in a interior decorated in the Pompeian style perfectly illustrates the taste of the time for the discovery of the villas of Pompei, thanks to the archeological excavations of the 18th century and the books published about them. To arrange its interiors based on the models of the Pompeian villas is then a trend that the most important people of that time will follow, as the Prince Napoléon, cousin of the Emperor Napoléon III, who orders the construction of a splendid Pompeian villa on the Avenue Montaigne, of which nothing remains but a few pictures and a painting by Gustave Boulanger, dated 1861 and called Répétition du « Joueur de flûte » et de la « Femme de Diomède » chez le Prince Napoléon.
This painting illustrates the poem « Fletus passeris Lesbiae » from the collection « Carmina » written by Catulle (87-54 av. J.-C.) : in his work, the author, in love with Lesbie, a married woman living in Rome, puts on a show a sparrow as the main center of interest of its mistress who neglects her suitor.
