Japanese Wireless Cloisonné Serving Tray Meiji After Namikawa Sosuke
Located in Long Island City, NY
A rare 19th Century Japanese copper serving tray with cloisonne enamel design. The central part of the tray depicts a wireless cloisonne picture, a coastal landscape view with a full moon. The hieroglyphical signature of the artist is in the lower right. The rims and the backside are decorated with floral ornaments. Blue and black color palette. Collectible Oriental Decor And Applied Arts For Interior Design. Namikawa Sosuke (1847–1910) was a Japanese cloisonné artist,[1] known for innovations that developed cloisonné enamel into an artistic medium sharing many features with paintings.[2][3] He and Namikawa Yasuyuki (no relation)[notes 1] were the most famous cloisonné artists of the 1890 to 1910 period, known as the "golden age" of Japanese enamels.[1] Around 1880 he set up and ran the Tokyo branch of the Nagoya Cloisonné Company.[1] He exhibited his artworks at national and international expositions, where he took an organising role.[2] He was recognised as an Imperial Household Artist and created art works for imperial residences. He sometimes signed his works with the character sakigake (Pioneer) the art work is based off a art work done by Sesshu Toyo Sesshu Toyo (?? ??, c. 1420 – August 26, 1506), also known simply as Sesshu (??), was a Japanese Zen monk and painter who is considered a great master of Japanese ink painting. Initially inspired by Chinese landscapes, Sesshu's work holds a distinctively Japanese style that reflects Zen Buddhist aesthetics.[1] His prominent work captured images of landscapes, portraits, and birds and flowers paintings, infused with Zen Buddhist beliefs, flattened perspective, and emphatic lines.[2] Sesshu was born into the samurai Oda family (???) and trained at Shokoku-ji temple in Kyoto, Japan, as a Zen monk.[1] From his early childhood, Sesshu showed a talent for painting and eventually became widely revered throughout Japan as a wise, reputable Zen scholar, and the greatest painter priest of Zen-Shu.[3] Sesshu worked in a painting atelier whilst training under Tensho Shubun (c. 1418–1463). But upon visiting China, his work betook a distinctive Chinese influence, merging Japanese and Chinese styles to develop his individualistic style of Zen paintings.[3] Sesshu's influence on painting was so wide that many schools of art appointed him their founder.[4] Sesshu's most acclaimed works are Winter Landscape (c. 1470s), Birds and Flowers (1420–1506) and Four Landscape Scrolls...

Peter Buchman "Now Showing”, Voice-Over Paintings Series, 2025
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary New York artist Peter Buchman's 'Now Showing' is created using laser-cut plexiglass, acrylic medium, and enamel on wood. It's part of his Voice-Over series, in which the artist gathers linguistic phrases to immortalize the valuable contributions of other cultures to the American Diaspora. To describe Buchman's word paintings as 'A Figure of Speech' is an understatement of the profound soulfulness they embody. They bear the marks of the artist's hand but also carry the collective spirit of those who came before him. These words derive from familiar phrases, music albums, his unique brand of irony, and the very essence of the human form. 'Now Showing' draws inspiration from Film Noir, a genre that held a profound influence on Peter's film and cinematic journey. The strident and punctual dialogue always fascinated him, along with the black and white director's perspectives. As an artist who spent hours drawing and sketching in pencil, the dramatic black and white hardened scenes just gripped him. He wanted smoke and spit and to rough something up. He wanted to emulate those textures, those scenes, that gut reaction with danger but in a poetic sense. The work reflects someone who is under interrogation, spilling their guts out, or just spilling the beans. It's a collection of phrases Peter unearthed or scratched out from movies or vintage pulp...

Chinese Hardstone Flower Model in a Cloisonné Enamel Flowerpot
Located in London, GB
Chinese hardstone flower model in a cloisonné enamel flowerpot Chinese, 20th Century Height 18cm, width 11cm, depth 11cm This intricate flower model combines super cloisonné enamelling with several carved semi-precious stones, making it a highly collectable object. A metal trunk is set within the planter, treated with resin to evoke the natural texture of the bark. The trompe l’oeil illusion is continued via the branches, which are comprised of wire wrapped with brown thread. The branches are capped with a number of nephrite leaves and hardstone blooms, which contrast dark green shades with light red and pink flowers. The petals are carved from carnelian, rose quartz, and jade, and these hardstones can connote symbolic symbolism such as strength and healing. Each bloom is centred by a beaded stigma, the bright colours of which stand out against the hardstones. The cloisonné enamel planter...

Antique Large Cloisonné Enamel Wall Crucifix with Font
Located in London, GB
Antique large cloisonné enamel wall crucifix with font French, Late 19th Century Height 57cm, width 33cm, depth 7cm This superb decorative cross is designed to hang on a wall, enabled by the small clover-shaped gilt metal handle which surmounts the top. The cross is shaped as a traditional Christian budded crucifix, and features stunning cloisonné enamel decoration that is expertly contrasted by an ebonised wood backing. The cross is centred by a budded panel, that features four blooming flowers wrapped within their vines in a heart-esque pattern. These designs are bordered by a red and gilt geometric surround, which provides an interesting contrast to the more flowing linearity within. Similar flower-and-vine motifs, as well as similar geometric bordering, adorn the rest of the cross’s main body. The colour contrasts within the cloisonné enamel are particularly pleasing, with the pale-yellow ground making the bright hues of the foliate decoration stand out. At the bottom of the cross sits a font, or stoup, originally designed to hold holy water. The font is also decorated with cloisonné enamel, but employs a geometric layered design in differing shades. The reverse of the cross is stamped ‘1138’. Replete with refined decorative elements, this excellent piece of religious décor...

Jacques Philippe Imberton, Oriental-Style Enameled Mirror
By Jacques-Philippe Imberton
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This superb mirror with polychrome enamel decoration is an exceptional piece inspired by Nasrid art, representative of the architectural and decorative forms of the Alhambra Palace. Mr. Philippe Imberton is, at the present time, the king of enamel; he sows it on the glass, with a prodigal and brilliant hand, early by large plates, sometimes by light veins, but in such a way as to always produce the happiest decorative effects. Article by Louis Enault in La Presse, published on September 25th, 1884. The geometric and vegetal patterns are a real innovative achievement in the glass enameling industry. Arranged on a rectangular mirror, the enamels are elegantly composed and colored to form a Nasrid-inspired decoration, representative of a Mudejar architecture, and manifesting the cultural and artistic exchanges in the Iberian Peninsula in the 12th and 16th centuries. The outline of enamels in the form of a horseshoe arch is a typical element of Arabic-Andalusian architecture, visible from early Christian churches to converted mosques. The horseshoe arch is supported by very thin columns with a concave base and molded rings, a unique type of column that appears only in the Alhambra Palace and indicates the passage to a sacred or royal place. The capital is divided into two bodies, the first of which is cylindrical and has a voluptuous floral decoration. Above, a prism decorated with a plant frieze with a rounded base delicately curves the whole mirror. I have rarely seen more power combined with greater skill. Article by Louis Enault in La Presse, published on December 17th, 1880. The talent of the enameler is rendered by the richness of the polychrome ornamentation of the vegetal patterns, notably by the arabesques of the polylobed arch, that is to say small contiguous arches, each ending in a pointed arch, also polylobed. These arches also evoke the muqarnas vault, one of the most impressive decorative elements among the ornamentation used in the Alhambra. The alfiz, the frame that surrounds the outside of the arch, is decorated with intricate bands of red and yellow floral filigree. The entire portico is framed by regular and harmonious friezes, decorated with vegetal motifs and structured by lines of small white flowers. Six wild pomegranate flowers, also known as balaustes, are framed on a white enamel background by the eight-pointed star, a recurring figure throughout Islamic art. The flowers are slightly open and accompanied by small pomegranate seeds, a connotation of fertility and the literal symbol of the city of Granada, where the Alhambra is located. The decoration is also characterized by four mirrored fleur-de-lis, as if to express the meeting of the two monotheistic influences in Granada. We can see the extent of refinement in the detail of the rhinestone fixtures that attach the glass mirror to a wooden support. While the representation of human figures in Muslim art is prohibited, the reflections of faces in the mirror naturally thwart the ban. One can read in an article of the Arts Industriels, published in La Presse on September 25, 1884, some lines notifying a mirror preceding ours: It will not displease the women either to find themselves beautiful by reflecting their fresh faces in this pretty oriental mirror...
