Salvador Corona Folding 4 Panel Floor Screen of Patzcuaro, Acapulco circa 1938
Located in Camden, ME
Salvador Corona painted four-panel wooden floor screen created in his studio in Mexico circa 1938. This rare hand crafted multi medium room divider was the property of the daughter of one of Mexico's wealthiest families of the period, who married the head of an international railroad supply company in their Warren McArthur furnished apartment on Park Avenue. The custom designed Warren McArthur furniture was a gift of the Pullman Company. In the early 1950s she opened a shop in Boothbay, Maine and later on upper Lexington Avenue specializing in the crafts of Mexico. This may have been a wedding present to her from the artist, her family or a close friend. The screen shows a the harbor of 19th Century Acapulco with the major buildings with gold leaf tiled roofs, Spanish galleons in the bay, a whale spouting in the distance, birds, and silver leafed palm trees . The harbor scene is bordered in gilt painted cord. Within which are appliquéd cutout medallions of various local fish and air bubbles covered in tinfoil ,a new material in the 30s. The tinfoil is finely etched in a variety of intricate patterns. Some of the appliqués are glazed in gold. The reverse side of the screen is an ivory white back ground with vignettes from the Maximilian era of Mexico. The screen is in good condition with wear consistent with its age. Salvador Corona was born on his family's ranch Hacienda Mideras in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Corona’s family moved to Mexico City in 1903 when he was 8. He attended the New English College in Mexico and then crossed into a career in bull fighting entering the ring for the first time in 1913. In 1919 in Guadalajara he was gored and turned to painting. He was given his first painting lessons by fellow bullfighter Jose Jimenez. Corona’s painting career spanned many decades and diverse formats including murals, furniture and decorative household items. In 1939, the Mexican government invited him to exhibit a set of painted furniture at it's booth at the World’s Fair in New York City. There, it was presented to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a gift. Corona’s work attracted many famous patrons, including the Duchess of Windsor, Gary Cooper and writer Clare Booth Luce. Salvador Corona’s work featured many Spanish Colonial vignettes, and he became an authority on Spanish and French costumes of the 1800s, which are frequently depicted in his paintings. His favorite subjects often included Mexican Colonial criollos and Purepecha (Tarascan) Indians. Birds and other animals feature prominently in his work. His traditional self-developed folk art style images depicted pastoral colorful scenes of Maximilian era Mexico painted on white backgrounds. His work can be divided into three categories: a vice-regal era with European and Creole noblemen mixed with Indians; stylized landscapes of Patscuaro, Acapulco or the Canal of Santa Anita; and his iconographic Mexican Virgins...

Marvel Comics Library, X-Men Vol. 1. 1963–1966, Limited Collector's Edition
Located in Los Angeles, CA
The Strangest Super-Heroes of All. The foundation of a pop-culture phenomenon. When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked Stan Lee to deliver another new team book for his line of comics, he had no idea he’d be getting something like The X-Men. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into—not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants—youngsters born with “X-tra” powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth—led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise. The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture: Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society; and Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind. Along the way, Lee and Kirby—who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age—introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas...

Contemporary Yellow Mirror, Off Round Hue #1 by Sabine Marcelis
Located in Copenhagen, DK
In 2013 Sabine Marcelis and Brit van Nerven started collaborating on the project ‘Seeing Glass’ a series of glass objects resulting from an ongoing study into optical effects created with glass as the primary material. Glass specialists allowed the designers to play around and experiment in their factory to investigate new possibilities and through the use of materials, color and layering, unexpected effects are created which play with ones visual perception as well as the surrounding space. The seeing glass project involved different collections one of them being the off round mirrors. The off round mirrors are continually evolving and expanding and has developed into the off round Hue...

Asian Figural Bronze Table Lamp of a Lying Buddha with Green Shade Myanmar 1920s
Located in Salzburg, AT
This early 20th-century Mandalay-style reclining monk, made of patinated bronze, has been transformed into a figurative table lamp. The disciple has a peaceful face and a resting, elegant posture. His face is handsome, with a slight smile and a straight nose. His robe lies in lush, wave-like folds on the surface of his body, reflecting the soft contours of the body beneath. The robe is richly decorated and suggests embroidery in silver, gold, and pearls. To match the object, the lamp structure was crafted in bronze and fitted with two sockets. The rectangular, dark green shade completes the lamp. Dimensons of sculpture on base: W 43 x D 12 x H 18cm The Mandalay-style Buddhist monk statue...
