Large 18th Century Spanish Handcrafted Sculpture of Virgin Mary "Immaculate"
Large 18th Century Spanish Handcrafted Sculpture of Virgin Mary "Immaculate"

Large 18th Century Spanish Handcrafted Sculpture of Virgin Mary "Immaculate"

Located in Madrid, ES

Completely hand-crafted in 18th century Spain, this sculpture of the Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception stands 1.5 meters / 5 feet tall, is topped by a silver halo / crown, and was most certainly created for devotional purposes, to be displayed in a church or chapel. Besides its impressive size, this sculpture is an excellent, truly museum-quality example of the Spanish “Estofado” polychrome technique, developed during the Gothic period to imitate rich brocade fabrics. The finely carved “fabric” areas of the sculpture would be first covered in gesso, and then a layer of gold leaf would be applied. The gold leaf would then be painted over with various colors of tempera paints. Once dry, the painted surface would be incised or scratched away in patterns, revealing the gold beneath. The sculpture was professionally restored in 2022 by a firm that is often contracted by the Spanish government to work on historic building interiors and museum pieces. The virgin was carefully cleaned, repaired and its condition stabilized. A complete and fully-illustrated restoration report will be included with purchase. Often confused with the virgin birth of Jesus, the belief that the Blessed Virgin Mary herself was conceived “immaculately” without original sin has been variously defended and debated within the Catholic Church since the pre-Middle Ages. For centuries, artists struggled to create an acceptable visual representation of this highly abstract concept, in part taking inspiration from the Book of Revelation and other scriptural sources. In this case, we see the Virgin standing on a half moon (biblically inspired, though also an ancient symbol of chastity) with her long natural hair loose down her back, another indication of purity. Both her white tunic and flowing blue mantle...

Antique Burmese Sadaik  Manuscript Chest.
Antique Burmese Sadaik  Manuscript Chest.

Antique Burmese Sadaik  Manuscript Chest.

Located in Point Richmond, CA

The chest is constructed of teak covered in lacquer and gold leaf with a hinged lid and detailed decoration on four sides. The high relief thayo lacquer depicts narrative scenes, bordered by a tendril vine frame with reserve cartouches of birds, beasts or men within.  The scenes may be from the Mahajanaka Jataka, one of the last Jataka tales of a life preceding the life of becoming the Buddha. This tale of endurance starts by depicting the rivalry between two brothers fighting for the throne. The lid depicts this great conflict having two battling elephants at center. Half of the surrounding characters are sending the opponents into retreat. The brother that is King is killed. The sides of the chest dynamically continue the story. On the right side of the front scene, the pregnant Queen at the front of the palace is informed of the King’s death  by her kneeling subjects.  On the left side of the front panel, the Queen is shown in retreat with her riches sacked upon her head. On the left side of the chest the story continues with Saka the Lord of the Dewas offering the Queen a lift upon an ox drawn cart. The right side of the chest depicts the pregnant Queen at her destination of refuge discussing her predicament with her long lost brother who offers protection in the birth of her child, Prince Mahajanaka. The elaborate high relief thayo lacquer is molded and modeled of a putty of lacquer sap mixed with clay, saw-dust, or ash. The interior and back are lacquered red. Provenance: From a residence designed by Kalef Alaton. East & Orient Company, Dallas. Private collection, Texas. Lark Mason...

Paravent - A six-fold Japanese screen with grape vines - 17th/18th century, Edo

Paravent - A six-fold Japanese screen with grape vines - 17th/18th century, Edo

Located in Brussels, BE

A six-fold paper screen painted in ink and colour on a gold ground with grape vines hanging from a pergola and woven fence amongst golden clouds, the details in gin-sunago (cut silver leaf) and moriage (raised design). The metal mounts are decorated with cloisonné enamel, a special detail rarely seen on screen mounts. Japan, 17th/18th century, Edo period. Grapes represent the autumn season and have been regarded as an auspicious symbol of fertility and prosperity since ancient times. Also the Japanese word of grape ‘budō’ is the same word for martial arts. Often paired with squirrels (‘risu’ in Japanese meaning, to follow discipline), the subject was a favourite of the samurai class. Designs incorporating grape vines have been used for ceramic and lacquer works as well as paintings from early times and screens depicting this subject matter seem to have been particularly popular in the early Edo period, however only a few examples are known today. These known examples depicting grape vines are rendered in a similar manner using gold leaf and moriage (raised design): A pair of screens from the Kano School housed in the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum (17th century, Momoyama period) A pair in the Gardner collection (17th century, accession no. P14e3) There are another comparable pair of 17th-century screens housed in the Okura Museum of Art, Tokyo and there are a pair of sugido (cedar wood doors) with the same subject housed in the Nagoya Castle, Aichi prefecture. Opinion Ciatti Chaperon Large Coat Stand
Opinion Ciatti Chaperon Large Coat Stand

Opinion Ciatti Chaperon Large Coat Stand

By Bruno Rainaldi, Opinion Ciatti

Located in Brooklyn, NY

The meaning of the name derives from the figurative use of the word chaperon which means “hood”, but in worldly contexts it refers to those who introduce somebody into a new environment. And so does Chaperon the clothes hanger designed by Bruno Rainaldi, which on one hand will be used as a storage for hoods and coats, and on the other to place the clothes of the newcomers. Chaperon is essential and sophisticated at the same time. A "classic" metal structure with a circular base and a rotating system, at the ends of which are placed small discs to easily hang the clothes. Mirrored discs that give a furtive view of what's behind us, the last undisturbed to prepare for what, once you take off your clothes, will be forced to face. Perfect in entrances, in the office or at the bar, and it is also suitable for a living room, in the bedroom, bathroom or in a walk-in closet. Extremely sophisticated in finishes, in polished chrome or glittering 24-karat gold, it is available in the version with 6 mirrors...
