Mid-Century French Armchair by Jean Pascaud & Vadim Androusov, 1940s

Mid-Century French Armchair by Jean Pascaud & Vadim Androusov, 1940s

By Vadim Androusov, Jean Pascaud

Located in Queens, NY

French mid-century light mahogany armchair with gilt bronze sabot feet and armrest supported by gilt bronze eagles with brown upholstery. Signed by Vadim Androusov for Jean Pascaud (ref: Les Decorateurs des annee 40, pg 172). Jean Pascaud was born in Rouen in 1903. He took a degree in engineering from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures, but his passion for furniture and décor, and the influence of his father in law, Auguste Bluysen, (then President of the Société des Architectes Modernes), led Pascaud to abandon a more traditional career and take up furniture design instead. By the late 1920s Pascaud regularly at the Salon des Tuileries, at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and the Arts Ménagers. His work is simple, yet technically ambitious and brilliant; his pieces are impressively large, but aesthetically balanced. Vadim Androusov was born in St. Petersburg in 1895. He was a grandson of the archeologist Schliemann. He arrived in Paris in 1920 and took classes at La Grande Chaumière academy; Bourdelle was one of his professors. His first sculptures date from 1925 and depict female figures and characters drawn from classical antiquity. He rarely used bronze, preferring terracotta, plaster, wood, and stone. He showed his creations at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants. While a sculptor, he also collaborated with interior decorators and created wall-mounted light fixtures, furniture pulls...

Antique 18th Century French Louis XVI Distressed Paint Decorated Armchair
Antique 18th Century French Louis XVI Distressed Paint Decorated Armchair

Antique 18th Century French Louis XVI Distressed Paint Decorated Armchair

Located in Swedesboro, NJ

Dimensions - H: 34 1/2 in W: 23 1/4 in D: 26 in SH: 16 in Exceptional antique French Louis XVI armchair dating to the late 18th century, produced during the reign of Louis XVI, circa 1774–1792. A wonderful example of authentic 18th-century French seating furniture, this beautifully proportioned fauteuil retains the architectural elegance, refined carving, and neoclassical vocabulary that define the Louis XVI period. The chair is presented with an aged and distressed painted finish that beautifully reveals the passage of time, giving the frame an exceptionally authentic, collected appearance and allowing the underlying craftsmanship to remain visible throughout. The chair features a generously proportioned upholstered back and seat framed by a finely carved wooden structure. Its design is distinctly Louis XVI, with a restrained, symmetrical silhouette, rounded and architectural contours, carved detailing, and elegantly tapered fluted legs. The arms flow gracefully from the upholstered back into curved supports before terminating in sculptural hand-carved details at the front of the chair. The apron surrounding the seat is particularly handsome, decorated with a continuous architectural motif and accented by carved corner blocks and rosette ornament. These details are carried down into the legs, which feature elongated fluting and classical proportions characteristic of French Neoclassical furniture of the period. The distressed painted surface is one of the most appealing aspects of the piece. Rather than appearing artificially aged, the finish has the character of an antique frame that has accumulated generations of wear, with areas of rubbed paint, exposed underlying layers, discoloration, and natural surface variation throughout. The result is a wonderfully timeworn appearance that works exceptionally well in both traditional French interiors and more relaxed, collected spaces. The finish allows the chair to retain the elegance of a formal Louis XVI fauteuil while giving it the relaxed character sought after by today's designers and collectors. Particularly noteworthy is the presence of metal reinforcement brackets installed along the rear of the chair. These brackets appear to have been added during the late 19th century, most likely as a period structural repair intended to reinforce the frame and preserve the integrity of the chair after generations of use. Their presence is an interesting part of the object's history and serves as a reminder that this is an authentic antique that was used, maintained, and preserved over many decades. Rather than attempting to conceal these later reinforcements, we feel they contribute to the chair's story and provide visible evidence of its continued life well beyond the 18th century. The chair does exhibit losses and age-related imperfections consistent with its considerable age, including several missing carved rosettes at the tops of the legs, minor losses to the carved decoration, and age gaps visible at some of the frame seams. These conditions are clearly visible in the photographs and are appropriate to disclose for a piece of this age. Importantly, the chair will be professionally reviewed by our refinisher prior to leaving our facility to ensure that the frame is sturdy and structurally sound. Any necessary stabilization will be addressed, and the painted finish can also be carefully touched up if desired by the purchaser, while preserving the character and patina that make the chair so appealing. The Louis XVI period represents one of the most important transitions in the history of French furniture, moving away from the exuberant curves and asymmetry of the preceding Rococo toward the ordered symmetry and classical references of the Neoclassical movement. Furniture from this period frequently incorporated fluted legs, rosettes, architectural moldings, oval forms, and other motifs inspired by the art and architecture of antiquity. This armchair embodies that aesthetic beautifully, with its disciplined proportions and classical ornament softened by the natural wear and patina acquired over more than two centuries. What makes this chair particularly compelling is its authenticity. Unlike later reproductions or 20th-century Louis XVI-style furniture, this is a genuine 18th-century French chair dating from the Louis XVI period itself. The later structural reinforcement, areas of loss, aged paint, seam separation, and surface wear all contribute to a remarkably tangible sense of history. It is a piece that has survived through multiple generations and periods of changing taste, retaining the essential character of the period in which it was originally made. This antique French fauteuil would make an exceptional accent chair in a formal living room, library, bedroom, dressing room, entryway, or private study. It would also be equally at home incorporated into a larger collection of French antiques, paired with an antique Louis XVI writing desk, commode, console, or secrétaire, or used as a statement piece within a more contemporary interior. Its restrained neoclassical form makes it surprisingly versatile, while the distressed painted finish adds the warmth and individuality that designers often seek when creating layered European interiors. For collectors of authentic French antiques, Louis XVI furniture, French Neoclassical seating, antique fauteuils, painted French furniture...
