The Long Vaisseau Bench works as an ottoman at a scale that most ottomans cannot reach: 96 inches wide, in Medium Hammered Copper metal, with the arching hourglass profile that Paul Mathieu derived from the metal-clad storage furniture of India. The lid opens to a teak-lined interior with a removable inset tray. At 17 inches, the height is correct for a footrest or additional seating. In Medium Hammered Copper, it is also an object that a room is composed around. The wood box is constructed to the arching profile before Medium Hammered Copper metal sheets are pattern-cut and fitted by hand across its full length. The sides narrow at the waist and flare at each end; the metal is fitted in sections, each secured with flush-set nails. The lid is hinged and fitted in the same Medium Hammered Copper metal.
