This is a handsome mixed marriage of two similar sets of early New England spindle backed Hitchcock chairs, and are made of pine and maple with primitive hand painted with decoration. All four have a red flower design with green leaves on the top back. Two of them are stenciled on the seats with gold designs. The measurements above pertain to the two stenciled ones, the other two are very close but measure one inch shorter and one inch deeper. As an American born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, his distinctive design were often influenced by his Scandinavian roots. Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His early career with Selig Mfg. Co. was prolific and helped put both himself and Selig on the map for modern furniture.
