"Fenix" Three-Seat Sofa Designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba for Driade
By Driade, Ludovica + Roberto Palomba 1
Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Fenix" is a three-seat sofa, designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba and manufactured by Driade, with a wooden and steel structure, supported by anthracite painted steel legs, polyurethane foam padding and cushions with polyurethane foams and goose feather padding. Fixed structure leather cover and removable cushions in fabric or leather. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 35.4", W. 118", H. 31.5", Seat H. 16.1" Sectional sofa has been the main recurrent theme concerning typological researches since last century golden age of design. Ludovica and Roberto Palomba deal with it emphasizing the sense of suspension from the floor, thanks to a thin metal structure, and modelling a great peninsula, provided with a gracefully asymmetric shape, in the version with terminals. LUDOVICA and ROBERTO PALOMBA, architects, work and live in Milan. They founded Palomba Serafini Associati in 1994. They received many international awards such as Compasso D'Oro, Elle Decoration International Design Award, Red Dot, Design Plus, Good Design Award, German Design Award. They work and are art director for some of the most established brands such as Antolini, Bisazza, Boffi, Brix, Cappellini, Dornbracht, Driade, Elica, Elmar, Exteta, Fiam, Flaminia, Foscarini, KitchenAid, Kos, Laufen, Lema, Plank, Poltrona Frau, Rapsel, Redaelli, Salviati, Sawaya & Moroni, Samsung, Schiffini, Tubes, Valli&Valli, Viccarbe, When Objects Work...

Roberto Sebastián Matta, Seating System Model “Malitte”, Italy, 1966
By Sebastian Matta
Located in Barcelona, ES
Roberto Sebastián Matta Seating system model “Malitte” Named after Malitte Pope, Matta´s wife Manufactured by Gavina (1966-1968) and Knoll International (1968-1974) Italy, 1966 Foam, wool fabric From the archives of Side Gallery Measurements: 160 cm x 160 cm x 63 cm 63 in x 63 in x 24.8 in Concept: Malitte is a seating system, an ever-changing composition of five polyurethane blocks covered in a slightly elastic fabric. A playful collection of colored interlocking organic shapes that can be assembled into a single sculpture, a “wall” dividing the environment with its formal and conceptual presence, which, when necessary, can instantly become a complete living room: a two-seater sofa, three seats and a pouf. Malitte is included in the permanent collection of MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art) in New York City. Biography: After graduating from university in Santiago de Chile in 1935 with a degree in architecture, Roberto Matta traveled to Europe where he met André Breton, the founder of the Surrealist movement in Europe. In 1938, he began painting and moved to the United States for ten years. During this period he sought to evoke the human psyche in his work, inspired by Freudian psychoanalysis. Matta’s works became increasingly dominated by a socio-political element, which broke from the conventions of Surrealism. Matta was also a seminal figure in abstract expressionism but broke away from this too to develop a highly personal artistic vision. His mature works blend abstraction with elements of figuration and fantastically-conceived, multi-dimensional space. He was heavily involved in the social movements of the 1960s and 1970s and a strong supporter of Salvador Allende...

17th Century Italian Louis XIV Lacquered and Gilded Sofa
Located in Firenze, IT
This extraordinary Italian Louis XIV sofa embodies the zenith of late 17th-century Neapolitan craftsmanship. This antique seating piece masterfully blends elegance and comfort, showcasing the refined taste of its era through its sinuous form and intricate detailing. The wooden frame of this luxurious couch is a testament to the artisan's skill, featuring a lustrous ivory-colored lacquer base beautifully accented with gold leaf detailing. The sophisticated "mecca" technique has been employed, involving the application of gold leaf over a red bole ground to create a warm, rich golden hue. This meticulous process results in a depth and luminosity that surpasses simple gilding, adding a luxurious dimension to the piece. The graceful silhouette of this antique settee is quintessentially Louis XIV, with a shapely backrest delineating three distinct, rounded seat areas. Elegant cabriole legs enhance the overall sense of movement and refinement. The curved armrests are particularly noteworthy, not only providing exceptional comfort but also serving as a canvas for the artisan's prowess. Each armrest is adorned with an intricately carved scroll motif, centered by a deeply carved rosette finished in radiant gold leaf. Every surface of this Baroque seating furniture is embellished with exquisite hand-carved details. Floral and foliate motifs adorn the frame, showcasing the woodcarver's mastery. A double band of gold leaf frames the entire perimeter of the settee, adding a final touch of luxury and definition to the piece. The upholstery complements the frame's opulence, featuring an antique green velvet with a sumptuous damask pattern. Green passementerie trims the edges, which, despite minor wear consistent with its age, remains in good overall condition. This Louis XIV canape is versatile enough to enhance various settings. In a grand entryway or corridor, it would create a stunning first impression. Placed at the end of a bed in a master suite, it would add a touch of regal elegance. In a formal living room or study, it could serve as a centerpiece, anchoring the room's design. Even in a professional setting, such as a high-end law office or executive suite, it would lend an air of established prestige. The value of this antique Italian seating stems from its exceptional provenance, superior craftsmanship, and the use of sophisticated techniques like "mecca" gilding. Its excellent state of preservation and the quality of the antique upholstery fabric...
