Brazilian Modern Sofa in Grey Velvet & Fiber by Jorge Zalszupin, 1973, Brazil

By Jorge Zalszupin

Located in New York, NY

Available now, the VIP sofa was conceived to attend Brazil’s growing market of office furniture in the seventies decade. The sofa fits two comfortably and consists of a fiberglass structure with smooth gray velvet. Not only beautiful and well designed, this piece is also known for its comfort. The base has been refinished and the sofa has been re-upholstered in silky velvet. This futuristic looking sofa effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. This sofa is currently displayed in the gallery with two Ax chairs from Peter Hvidt and looks spectacular. The last two images are vintage publications showcasing the piece Dimensions: H27.6, W63, D33.5 (in) H70, W160, D85 (in) About Jorge Zalszupin a native of Warsaw, Poland, studied architecture at Bucharest’s Ecole des Beaux Arts. While working as an architect in Paris, he found inspiration in articles about Brazilians Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx and immigrated to Brazil. His work as an architect created a demand for decoration and furniture proposals that suited the style of his projects and, for many years, Zalszupin designed and executed them for his clients. The demand was as great as the desire to grow and expand his business, and he then decided to found Atelier Móveis...

"Concha" Sofa by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, Modern Brazilian Design, 1950s

By Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler

Located in New York, NY

Designed by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, modern Brazilian sofa, iron, and velvet. Brazil, circa 1950s. Shell or "Concha" sofa is made of iron and recently reupholstered in yellow velvet by the experienced craftsmen in our team. The upholstery was chosen considering the contemporary proposal of the piece. The sofa features a comfortable seat, clean design, and freedom of user movements and is constructed in a frame with metal rods elegantly positioned to give strength to the piece, a common trait of designers. The buttons velvet coated between seat and backs were used, by the designers, for an excellent velvet finish, and the restoration proposal was to maintain them. Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner were the primary designers for the iconic Brazilian furniture...

Brazilian Wood Three-Seater Sofa by Rino Levi, Brazil 1950s
Brazilian Wood Three-Seater Sofa by Rino Levi, Brazil 1950s

Brazilian Wood Three-Seater Sofa by Rino Levi, Brazil 1950s

By Rino Levi

Located in Utrecht, NL

Rino Levi was one of the pioneers of the modern movement in Brazil, advocating for simple, practical and economical design, disparaging the imitation of classicism. ‘Classical spirit’ rather than classical forms was his ideal. Levi was instrumental in spreading the fame of Brazilian modernism through his furniture designs as well. As this beautiful Brazilian wood sofa shows, by the 1960s, Levi abandoned Italian rationalism in favour of an approach closer to that of the Rio modernists both in his architectural and furniture designs. As a piece of true Brazilian mid-century design, the beauty of the wood and organic shapes and lines dominate this three-seater sofa. The tilted, architectural lines of wood making up the armrests create a visually distinct and exciting appearance. The additional horizontal lines connecting to the backrest are a creative addition, while also supporting the overall stability. The frame with its joinery praises Rino Levi’s craftsmanship and architectural expertise. The beautiful colour of the wood is highlighted by the light upholstery of the body in a premium bouclé fabric, including the three removable cushions. This sofa model is rare to find, for as during Brazil's military dictatorship, it was against the law to export furniture. The ban on exports only ended in the 1980s, but it still took some time for things to change, not to mention that handmade pieces were created in limited editions. Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that this sofa is special, and a real rarity. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some scratches and marks on the wood. The sofa has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 86.41 in W x 28.74 in D x 30.31 in H; Seat height 16.14 in 219.5 cm W x 73 cm D x 77 cm H; Seat height 41 cm About the Designer: Rino Levi was a Brazilian architect important to the development of modernism in Brazil. Levi was born to Italian Jewish parents on December 31, 1901 in São Paulo, Brazil. After graduating from Colégio Dante Alighieri in São Paulo, Levi studied in Milan and Rome under Marcello Piacentini. In 1924, he moved to the School of Architecture of Rome. There, he met Adalberto...

Manufactured by Fango. Colombia, 2023 Yaré fiber and metal structure. Measurements 210 x 85 x 95h cm 82,7 x 33,5 x 37,4h in Provenance Fango Studio, Medellín, Colombia. Exhibitions Casavells 2023. Concept The Ibuju collection projects the synergy of designing and storytelling, an essential intention of Fango’s creative director, Francisco Jaramillo. The series stems from concern over the indiscriminate logging and overuse of the native woods from the endangered green lung of planet earth, the Amazon, a jungle increasingly fading from the world. Looking for alternatives to build functional furniture in native materials, Jaramillo and the weavers of Fango discovered the renewable Yaré fiber. Yaré is a fiber commonly called “vine", a root that grows around the trunks of trees in the Colombian Amazon. These fibers are used by local indigenous communities in southern Colombia for handcrafted weaving, which inspired Jaramillo to translate the native aesthetics and geometries of primitive wooden...
