Vanity Box by Mappin & Webb in Coromandel with Sterling Silver

By Mappin & Webb

Located in Northampton, GB

FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING Vanity Box by Mappin & Webb in Coromandel with Sterling Silver dated 1854. The vanity box is of rectangular form extensively veneered in exotic coromandel and edged throughout with brass, incorporating double brass stringing to both the lid and front with a raised escutcheon to the centre. Opening the vanity box reveals a complete fitted interior comprising seventeen glass bottles topped with engraved sterling silver lids hallmarked for James Vickery, London, 1854. The quality of silver mounted fittings reflects the mid nineteenth century standard expected from a luxury retailer such as Mappin & Webb. The front panel folds down to reveal wing compartments which pivot outward through 180 degrees. Within sits a comprehensive mother of pearl handled tool pad incorporating a shoehorn, penknife, thread hook, multiple pairs of scissors, tweezers, file, needle and pricker. Beneath the tool pad is a concealed compartment accessed by depressing the retailer’s plaque positioned along the rear edge of the case. The retailer’s plaque reads: Mappin & Webb, Sheffield 158 to 162 Oxford Street & Mansion House Buildings London. With the wings extended, additional concealed drawers can be accessed by removing the rectangular jars positioned to the rear and depressing the back edge of each compartment base, activating a spring loaded latch mechanism. The underside of the lid houses a removable mirror bordered with gold tooling, designed to stand independently on its bracket. Behind the mirror is a further concealed compartment suitable for storing correspondence or documents. A fully fitted mid nineteenth century coromandel vanity box...

Original 19th C Sleigh Bells - Extra Long - Perfect Jingle Bells Sound 39 Bells!

Located in Red Lion, PA

19th Century Extra-Long Brass Sleigh Bells on Leather Belt: 39 Jingle Bells, Nearly 8 Feet Long A spectacular and highly authentic set of original 19th-century brass sleigh bells, featuring an impressive 39 hand-cast bells mounted on a nearly 8-foot-long leather strap. This exceptional antique offers not only a beautiful historic presence, but also the perfect traditional “Jingle Bells” sound, bright, rich, and unmistakably festive, just as sleigh bells should be. Each bell is solid brass, tightly fastened and fully functional, producing that magical tone that modern reproductions rarely achieve. The leather strap retains its original metal buckle and remains surprisingly supple and pliable for its age. With simple annual conditioning, it should continue to remain strong and flexible for years to come. The strap appears handmade and hand-stitched, and while there are small areas of thread loss consistent with age, the original workmanship was so solid that these minor imperfections do not compromise the structural integrity of the piece. The leather has developed a beautifully worn patina that speaks to more than a century of use, adding depth and authenticity to its appearance. In the 19th century, long straps of sleigh bells like this were affixed to horse harnesses so travelers could be heard approaching through winter snow, helping prevent collisions on narrow rural roads. Over time, this cheerful sound became woven into the imagery of the holiday season and ultimately inspired the classic Christmas carol, “Jingle Bells.” Today, authentic sets like this capture the warmth and romance of Victorian winter travel and embody the nostalgia of an old-fashioned Christmas. Because of its impressive length, this sleigh bell strap lends itself beautifully to holiday decorating. Many collectors enjoy hanging it on a door so it jingles each time someone enters or exits, while others drape it across a mantel for a warm, traditional seasonal moment. It also looks wonderful wrapped around a staircase railing, stretched along a festive tablescape as a conversation piece, or even displayed on a wall as a piece of functional folk art. However it’s arranged, the authentic sound and historic character bring instant Victorian holiday charm to any space. Original 19th-century sleigh bell straps in this size and condition have become increasingly difficult to find, especially with such a full complement of bells still attached. Modern reproductions, while decorative, seldom replicate the deep, resonant sound of genuine antique brass or the rich patina only time and use can create. For lovers of Americana, equestrian history, Victorian Christmas...

Oil on canvas 1st halve of the 19th century. Framed with antique gilded frame, stretcher frame replaced. A marvelous wall decoration for each rustig log cabin. The Biedermeier period runs parallel to the Romantic period and both are characterized by similar features. Domesticity, closeness to nature, folksiness and need for harmony are buzzwords of this time. The focus is on the simple, the conservative and the tried and tested. There is little experimentation and more observation and enjoyment. The art style is kept very realistic and shows great similarity to photography. Domestic idyllic representations, beautiful landscape and impressive portraits are the most popular topics for oil paintings...

SAVORY and Sons - 9pc. 19th Century Victorian (British) Sterling Silver Tea Set

SAVORY and Sons - 9pc. 19th Century Victorian (British) Sterling Silver Tea Set

By Maison Odiot Paris, A. B. Savory

Located in Wilmington, DE

Direct from a private mansion in Paris, a stunning 9-piece antique Victorian sterling silver tea set by one of Britain’s premier silversmiths “Savory and Sons” professionally refinished to near new condition and including 8 anti-tarnish storage wraps for easy storage – circa early 1800s. The annals of British silversmithing are replete with illustrious names, each contributing to an enduring legacy of artistry and opulence. Among these distinguished firms, Savory and Sons occupies a position of particular reverence. From its early 19th-century origins in the heart of the City of London to its eventual evolution into a larger commercial entity, the name Savory became synonymous with the pinnacle of quality, elegance, and refined taste. More than mere retailers or manufacturers, they were arbiters of style, purveyors of luxury to a clientele that included royalty, and creators of some of the most exquisite silver objects of the Victorian era. Savory - A Foundation of Quality and Craftsmanship: The story of Savory and Sons is one of entrepreneurial spirit, family partnership, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. The firm's origins can be traced to 1812, when Adey Bellamy Savory, a man of Huguenot descent—a heritage often associated with exceptional skill in the precious metal trades—established his business at 14 Cornhill in the City of London. Initially listed in directories under various specializations, from goldsmith to dealer in foreign coins, A.B. Savory was building a foundation as a purveyor of fine and curious goods. This early period was crucial for establishing the reputation for reliability and discernment that would become the firm's hallmark. A pivotal transformation occurred in 1833 when Adey Bellamy's sons, Joseph and Albert, were taken into partnership, and the firm's name was officially changed to A.B. Savory & Sons. This marked the beginning of its most celebrated era. The business model was sophisticated, operating on two fronts. They maintained a retail presence at various addresses on Cornhill, strategically positioned opposite the Bank of England, a locale that placed them at the very center of British commerce and affluence. Simultaneously, they operated a significant manufacturing enterprise, or "silver manufactory," at 5 Finsbury Place, South, and later at 15 Gee Street and 18 Red Lion Street in Clerkenwell, the historic heart of London's watchmaking and silversmithing trades. This vertical integration allowed Savory & Sons to exert unparalleled control over the quality of their wares, from the initial design concept to the final polish. The exceptional quality and craftsmanship associated with the Savory name was not solely the product of the founding family, but also of the master artisans they employed. A prime example is the silversmith William Smily and his sons. William Smily, who had been apprenticed to a spoon and fork maker, began working in Savory's Gee Street factory and eventually rose to become the works manager for A.B. Savory & Sons. It was Smily who registered his own maker's mark, which was used on silverware manufactured for the firm, often accompanied by the stamp "A.B. Savory & Sons". This practice of collaborating with and retaining craftsmen ensured that the silver bearing the Savory name was not merely retailed but was conceived and executed to the highest international standards. The "SS" mark, used by both William and later his son Samuel (who succeeded him as works manager), became an internal stamp of quality, signifying that a piece had been crafted under the watchful eye of a master. The detail lavished on even the most functional items is a testament to this culture of excellence. Royal Patronage and Public Accolades: For a firm like Savory and Sons, the ultimate validation of its status came in the form of royal patronage. Their location opposite the Bank of England and their reputation for supplying "the World's Elite," placed them in the direct orbit of the aristocracy and the royal household. To be a silversmith of choice for the upper echelons of society was, in effect, to operate under a de facto royal warrant, as taste and fashion flowed...
