Brazilian Buffets

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Caviuna Hardwood by Giuseppe Scapinelli, 1956
By Giuseppe Scapinelli
Located in New York, NY

The sides are curved and the structure rests on four legs. The wood has been refinished and besides the marks of age, the piece is in excellent condition. With this Brazilian Modern piece, Giuseppe Scapinelli highlights one of his favorite wood species, the caviuna of light blond appearance with darker veins that the designer knows how to play to form geometric patterns on the front that offers a contrast giving charm and lightness with the legs designed in curves. This credenza effortlessly flexes into any Mid-Century Modern, modern, Danish modern or contemporary environment. Brazilian Modern Credenza in Hardwood & Brass Handles, Jean Gillon, 1960s
By Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year. The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys. There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties. Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This credenza is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. The credenza is showcased in our showroom next to Jorge Zalszupin’s bar cart...

Abrigo Credenza in Cabreúva wood - With artisans from Brazil
By Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros
Located in Jundiaí, SP
The Shelter Credenza follows the traces of ocas, highlighting the sliding doors in Cabreuva wood, that is a reinterpretation of the traditional mats woven with buriti straw. “This braid evokes the strength and resilience of this people and the beauty of their culture”, recalls the artist. "I like the moments of sharing, where without realizing we learn at the same time that we teach, whether by words, looks or demonstrations. Unfortunately, this face-to-face exchange was interrupted by the pandemic, but with the help of Kulikyrda Mehinako, me and the women from Kaupüna Village were able to carry out them at a distance. Through video lessons I learned the traditional technique of weaving a mat and, in São Paulo, using cylinders of solid cabreuva instead of buriti stems, I wove a mat tha became the door of Shelter Credenza". With a design inspired by the oca structure, this piece represents the family, the shelter, where everyone protects them selves from the cold an rain, where they get together to sleep, where the young women go to their seclusion and is also the place that keeps intact the traditions, identity and culture fo the Mehinako people, living in the Xingu Indigenous Territory. Cabreuva solid wood and cotton threads dyed naturally with raw materials collected in the vicinity of Kaupüna village. 47 1/4 x 118 1/8 x 17 3/4 in 120 x 300 x 45 cm About the Xingu collection...
