Constructed in ebony with arabesque foliate cut brass inlays, with premiere-partie panels set with tortoiseshell grounds and brass inlay work, and having extensive fine quality ormolu mounts; rising from animal paw sabots, mounted with female masks at the shoulders; the apron housing three drawers, with faux drawers to the obverse, the central drawers set with a Bacchic mask issuing foliates, the platform of serpentine form, having a brass guard edge, and inset with a gilt tooled morocco leather. Stamped to the carcass ‘BF’ and ‘Gros’.

Denise Ledoux-Lebard’s ‘Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siecle’. Published by les Editions de l’Amateur, 2000, lists a Benjamin Gros, whose enterprise amalgamated with the noted ebeniste Winckelsen in 1871; Gros had received an honourable mention for his ‘Boulle’ furniture in the Exposition Universelle in 1855.

Complete your library or study with this antique fruitwood "Bargueno" or "Vargueno" from Spain, circa 1780. Built in two-pieces, the Spanish desk features a portable cabinet with forged side handles for traveling purposes, and a separate base with barley twist legs. The top cabinet features front marquetry decor and geometrical diamond inlay motif, embellished with two iron latches and the sides, and a pull down door revealing a theater with multiple drawers and a writing surface. The inside includes two small doors and nine separate compartments for easy storage and sorting mail. The trunk sits on four carved legs with bottom stretcher, and has a large drawer across the front for additional storage. The versatile, useful cabinet is in good condition with a rich walnut patina throughout.

It is veneered with the highest quality parquetry in the Louis Cube design with tulipwood and kingwood and set with gilt bronze galleries and mounts. The rectangular writing or Ladies desk stands on four octagonal tapered legs with ormolu mounts ending in gilt bronze sabots. The top is covered with a gilt tooled brown leather writing surface.
