Italian Ceramic Saucers "Bucchero" by C.A. Rossi Gio Ponti Style Gubbio
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Iconic ceramic "Buccheri" saucers with a small base (2 pieces); the “bucchero” is a type of black and shiny pottery, often fine and very light, produced by the Etruscans to make domestic furnishings and decorative objects; the "bucchero" was used in Etruria from the second quarter of the 7th century BC-the first half of the 5th century BC; the black monochrome integral is the most evident feature of this type of pottery and the coloring was obtained through a particular firing; the term "bucchero" comes from the Castilian "bùcaro", with which they defined some vases arrived from South America more or less in the same period of the first findings in Etruscan archaeological sites. In the "bucchero" is black both the mixture and the surface, which is shiny and compact. The color is not obtained by painting but thanks to a special firing process in the absence of oxygen, which prevents the chemical transformations of oxidation that make it take on the typical orange coloring to the iron ores contained in the clay. Our "Buccheri" saucers were made by Carlo Alberto Rossi (1903-1970) in his workshop in Via Savelli Della Porta in the historic center of Gubbio (Italy) and bear the artist's signature on the bottom; the laboratory "Buccheri Antonio...

Gandharan Stucco Head of a Bodhisattva, Region of Hadda, 3rd-5th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A striking Gandharan molded stucco head of a male Bodhisattva, tentatively identified as Manjushri, ancient region of Gandhara, probably Hadda or surrounding area, 3rd-5th century. The Bodhisattva is sculpted of stucco in an idealized manner as a youthful male, with soft and kind features, a benign expression on his face. He wears an elaborate pleated turban wrapped around his head, with two sweeping lobes at the front. His turban secured on one side by a small image of a roaring lion. The lion may be read as a reference to Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, who is often depicted as riding or subduing a roaring lion, a metaphor for taming the wild thoughts of the mind. Manjushri gazes outwards in a beatific manner from almond shaped eyes, a gentle smile on his lips. The eyes at different levels when looking at the sculpture head on, indicating the original placement of the head was meant to be viewed at an angle. Remnants of pigments to the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Mounted on a custom black metal stand. Hadda was an important center of Buddhist learning in the early history of Greco Buddhist Gandhara, and at one time may have housed a bone relic of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. The sculpture and architecture of Hadda followed Hellenistic artistic conventions faithfully, leading some scholars to believe the distinct Greco Buddhist style of Gandhara was first developed in Hadda before spreading to the rest of the region. The kingdom of Gandhara was situated at a crossroads of trade and cultures. Being one of the last remnants of Alexander the Great's Empire, the inhabitants of the Greco-Bactrian Buddhist kingdom preserved Greek culture and heritage for centuries after the decline of the Greek Empire...

An Early, Late 17th to 18th Century, Patinated Bronze Model of Laocoön
Located in New York, NY
A Marvelous and Pristine Condition Italian Early Example, Late 17th to Early 18th Century Patinated Bronze Model of Laocoön. This piece is marvelously cast, hand-chassed, and hand-chiseled with the finest detail. The patina is original from the late 17th to 18th century and is still in fantastic condition after about 350 years. This model is after the famous poem written by Virgil, 'The Aeneid'. This story describes the time when the Greeks left a trojan horse as a gift at the gates of the city of Troy. Laocoön then went forth to try and warn the people of Troy of the gift prior to their demise. To protect the Greek people and help destroy Troy, The G-DDESS Minerva, otherwise known as Athena, sent two serpents to destroy Laocoön and take the plan of the Greeks to fruition. This bronze cast exemplifies the moment when the serpents took siege of Laocoön and brought him and his two sons down prior to them warning the people of Troy. The model exemplifies strength, courage, family, love, bravery, and death all within the same cast. This is truly a spectacle of history and one of the earliest models of this subject we have seen in our 5 generations of buying and selling art...
