Baines Football Trade Card, Rochdale. Well Centred
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Baines football trade card, Rochdale. Well Centred.
A rare circular football trade card in the shape of a leather football ball. Made by the toy shop owner from Bradford, John Baines. Baines went on to produce not only football cards but eventually covered scores of different sports, from golf, cricket, tennis to horse racing and bowls, and just about any kind of sporting affiliations in just about every city, town and village in the UK. The cards were promoted in various prize competitions like finding certain "medal cards", collection a certain amount of empty packets. One could always submit a mini essay on sport with the winner having their writing printed on the backs of the cards. Hence why the backs are so varied and different.
The baines card offered for sale is printed in a yellow tone with a picture of a young boy playing football, 'The Village Champion', to the front with the words 'Well Centred, Rochdale'. To the reverse 'BAINES' gold medal football cards, We guarantee to give every week during our three months' Competition, 50 Jerseys, Shirts or Sweaters. Boxing Carpet, Randolph Turpin, Middleweight Champion of the World, Sugar Ray
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
A large vintage Randolph Turpin carpet.
A wonderful impressive carpet made for the British boxer Randolph Turpin (nick named 'The Leamington Licker'). The carpet measuring nearly 3 meters by 4 meters was made by a life long friend, Mr Dennis Quayle, and would make a remarkable wall hanging. Quayle owned a high quality furniture store in Birmingham and supplied amongst other furnishings, high quality handmade carpets. Following Turpin’s triumph over Sugar Ray Robinson to win the world title in 1951, Mr Quayle had the carpet made as a gift for Turpin. Later in Turpin’s life when in trouble, Quayle bought back the carpet in order to help him financially, with the carpet remaining in the Quayle family ever since.
Randolph Turpin is one of Britain’s greatest sportsmen who plied his trade with courage, honor and skill and gave Britain one of its best nights in a boxing ring. As a 33-1 underdog Turpin humbled the greatest fighter the world had seen, Sugar Ray Robinson, at Earls Court in London to become Middleweight Champion of the World. Sugar Ray was at his peak and the fight was the culmination of the flamboyant champion’s famous tour of Europe. Unable to cope with Turpin’s long reach and unusual wide stance the American struggled to land punches and Turpin’s strength inside was too much and he took the win on points after 15 rounds. He would lose the belt in a rematch 64 days later but Turpin’s achievement is a remarkable one which crowns a distinguished boxing career, he was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame in 2001.
Randolph Turpin's titles:-
British Middleweight 17th Oct 1950
European Middleweight 27th Feb 1951
World Middleweight 10th July 1951
Commonwealth Middleweight 2nd Oct 1952
Won the British Light...

The blade reads:-
Cambridge Scouts 1st Boat 1925.

Bumped:- Town II, Old Choristers II, Y.M.C.A I, Old Choristers I.
IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING SHIPPING.
As the oar is full length (12 foot) shipping can be quite expensive. We have come up with an ingenious way to cut the oar so as to make shipping cheaper, the oar can then be easily reassembled. One of the images shows different images of an oar that has been cut down. It is cut by the leather sleeve so the joint is less visible or obvious. The oar can then be bolted together to make the oar one solid piece.
Please do enquire about the different shipping options.
The Cambridge Scout Boat Club was formed in 1923 on CC Charlie Wood's advice. It was thought to be the only such club in the country. C T Wood had rowed at Shrewsbury School and was treasurer for '99 rowing club in its early days.
'There are three particular things we owe to C.T.Wood;… in 1923 he urged the formation of the Scout Boat Club, of which Fred Feary was the first Captain, and I a humble non-rowing member'. WTT Archaeology 1978
The club was for Scout Masters, Scouts and Rovers over 16.
The club was successful from the start and the first boat sat in the top three for a quarter of time it raced and the top five for half the time. Scouts I reached 3rd position by the end of their fourth years racing and was only out if the top 5 for one year in the next quarter of a century.
In some years it put out four boats in the town bumps and four in the Time Race, the only two events for which we have most of the results It was Head of the River on three occasions.
Scouts I had the rare distinction of starting from last boat and reaching Head of the River in the town bumps without being bumped.
The Scouts' Debut
'In 1923 a new club, known as the Cambridge Scouts Boat Club, was formed. It became affiliated with the Cambridge Rowing...

Golf Oil Painting of Dr. William Laidlaw Purves by Hon. John Collier
By John Collier
Located in Oxfordshire, GB
Impressive modern Golf Portrait, William Laidlaw Purves.
Large oil on canvas of Dr. William Laidlaw Purves after the original oil painting by the Hon. John Collier (1850 - 1934), a prominent London artist. The painting is un-framed but is stretched and ready to hang, artist of this particular painting is unknown. The original painting now hangs at Royal St. George's, Sandwich. William Laidlaw Purves, oculist and obsessive golfer, was an Edinburgh born surgeon who worked in London, but remembered by most for his contributions to the golfing world. A very influential man, he was one of the key figures behind the spread of the game of golf in England towards the end of the 19th century. He won many important club trophies, the last being in 1914, aged 71 with a handicap of 3. He died at his home Hardwick Cottage, Wimbledon Common on 30th December 1917, and at the time he was a member of no fewer than 32 golf clubs.
As a student Purves had played golf at Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh and by the time of his London appointment he was a member of both the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. Upon his move to London in 1874 he joined the London Scottish and Wimbledon Golf Club. The two clubs shortly separated into two separate clubs, The London Scottish Golf Club and the Wimbledon Golf Club, but both continued to play on Wimbledon Common. In 1882 the Wimbledon became the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club and Purves became an active committee member, later being elected Captain. As the two clubs also shared the Common with the public play was restricted, so together with a fellow Scot and keen amateur golfer (Henry Lamb...
