Barcelona Olympic Football Mascot Cobi (1992) by Javier Mariscal
Barcelona Olympic Football Mascot Cobi (1992) by Javier Mariscal

Barcelona Olympic Football Mascot Cobi (1992) by Javier Mariscal

By Javier Mariscal

Located in London, GB

The 1992 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXV Olympiad, were held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, from 25 July to 9 August 1992. Commonly referred to as Barcelona '92, these games were notable for being the last Summer and Winter Olympics to be held in the same year, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided thereafter to alternate the events in separate even-numbered years, starting in 1994. This was a pivotal moment in Olympic history, as the Barcelona Games marked the first Summer Olympics held in the post-Cold War era and were free from the boycotts that had plagued previous events, a situation not seen since the 1972 Munich Olympics. Barcelona '92 is widely regarded as one of the most successful Olympic Games, contributing significantly to the modernization and global image of the city. It was also a Games of many firsts: the debut of the "Dream Team" in basketball, which featured NBA players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, and the reintegration of South Africa into the international sports community after a 32-year ban due to apartheid. The participation of a unified German team following the reunification of East and West Germany, and the absence of the Soviet Union (though its former republics competed as the Unified Team), further emphasized the geopolitical shifts of the time. The official mascot for the 1992 Barcelona Games was *Cobi*, a stylized sheepdog designed by Catalan artist and designer Javier Mariscal. Mariscal, already a significant figure in contemporary design, was known for his eclectic and playful style, often blending comic art with a modernist sensibility. His creation of Cobi was a departure from previous Olympic mascots...

Antique Golf Print, Royal North Devon Golf Club, Photogravure of Westward Ho
Antique Golf Print, Royal North Devon Golf Club, Photogravure of Westward Ho

Antique Golf Print, Royal North Devon Golf Club, Photogravure of Westward Ho

Located in Oxfordshire, GB

Royal North Devon Golf Club 1893 by Mayall & Co. Ltd. A great image of the members of the 'Royal North Devon Golf Club, Westward Ho!' from 1893. The figures are all photographs superimposed onto a painted background of the course. In the margin is printed 'Permanent Autotype, Produced by Mayall & Co. Ltd. 73 Piccadilly'. The image appears very much photographic but is more of a photomechanical print rather than a photograph. John Jabez Edwin Paisley Mayall (1813-1901) was an English photographer who in 1860 took the first carte-de-visite photographs of Queen Victoria. Taken from Royal North Devon:- Royal North Devon at Westward Ho! Can rightly claim to be the cradle of English Golf. Founded in 1864, it is the oldest golf course in the country and is regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The golf course is as tough as any of the UK's more famous links layouts and has recently been placed in Golf World 's 'Top 100 Courses in the World' that a golfer 'must play'. Not only is Royal North Devon a great course, it is also a place of huge historical importance. Inside the warmly welcoming clubhouse, the golf museum, honours boards and the clubs top competition trophies are worth a visit on their own and help to tell the story of the game and this remarkable club's unique place in it. Above all, this is great, natural golf that is largely unchanged from 100 years ago when Harold Hilton et al pronounced Westward Ho! As England's No 1 competition golf course. RND is pure, raw exhilaration and ultimately the experience of playing a fast running links in a stiff breeze still tests the very best in the game. Many of the great players of the last 100 years were regular competitors at RND but the greatest of them all is without doubt John Henry Taylor...

Sterling Silver Pill Box with Equestrian Enamel Scene, in the English Style, 20th C A charming vintage sterling silver pillbox featuring a finely hand-painted enameled panel depicting a racehorse and jockey in a pastoral landscape, executed in the English sporting style. The chestnut brown horse is shown in profile, standing in a grassy field beneath a pale sky, while the jockey wears traditional racing silks in green and gold, seated calmly in the saddle. Though unmarked for country of origin, the box is clearly stamped “STERLING,” indicating likely American or Continental manufacture, 20th C. The enamel panel is delicately domed and bezel-set into the lid. The silver body is plain and rectilinear with a hinged lid that opens smoothly and closes securely. Dimensions: Width: 1.5 inches Depth: 1 inch Height: 0.5 inch A beautifully detailed piece, ideal for collectors of equestrian memorabilia, vintage enamel...

Antique Rowing Oar - Magdalen College, Oxford, 1880. A fine and original Oxford University presentation rowing oar, dating from 1880, attributed to Magdalen College. This full-length oar, measuring over 12 feet, is a traditional example of the commemorative oars presented to college rowing crews. It features gilt calligraphy and two hand-painted heraldic shields - those of Oxford University and Magdalen College. The Oxford University crest displays a dark blue shield with an open book surrounded by three golden crowns, while the Magdalen College shield bears a striking design of black and white diamonds, topped with a black band containing three white lilies with gold stems and centers. The signwriting remains in excellent condition, and the calligraphy lists the names and weights of the 1880 crew in beautiful gilt script. A beautiful and authentic antique oar...
