Hand carved in France, circa 1850, this parcel gilt side table with breche marble top is from the Napoleon III period. Sometimes referred to as “Second Empire style”, a hallmark of the period, which incorporates motifs from numerous periods, is to utilize all existing space; you will notice the abundance of neoclassical motifs and highly painted wood sections. The 18 ½ inch diameter breche marble top features a beautiful mosaic of cream, brown, gold, black, and beige markings. It is inset within the wooden base which has been embellished with a gesso foliate ring border. The wood has been painted cream with parceled areas of gilt, giving the table added appeal. There are four cabriole legs with scrolled feet that are connected by a geometric stretcher with concave sides and a thin raised molding that surrounds a caned middle section. Each leg is topped by a square floret above a laurel leaf margent. A ring of beading over spiral fasces adorns the apron, which also has a pair of fantastically carved floral garlands between each leg.
