Atomic Molecule Base Dining Table

About the Item

American Mid-Century Modern expandable dining table with extraordinary base which appears to defy gravity. I need my 10th grade geometry teacher to explain the theorem behind this amazingly sculptural structure which resembles a tetrahedral molecular model. This table appears literally to pick itself up by its own bootstraps! The wood appears to be pecan (aka hickory) and butternut (white walnut) with a satin finish beautifully grained. Brass cuffs on tapered legs above four ball feet. Two leaves with matching aprons show minimal color differentiation with the table top. The ends of the tabletop have a crisp foil edge like the wings of a stealth airplane. Originally purchased in 1958 which makes sense as that is the same year as the Brussels Expo (World's Fair), the center of which was the Atomium designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak. Clearly molecular structures were in the zeitgeist. Maximum length is 86 inches long with two 12 inch leaves fully extended; 62 inches long without leaves. 42 inches wide. 28 inches high. First 11 photos showing table with both leaves; photos 13, 14 and 15 show with one leaf (74 inches length); photos 16-20 show table without any leaves. Top can be detached from base for ease of transport.
