About the Item
This table is made from reclaimed oak and solid brass. The top is made from a solid piece of of wood with a mortise cut slightly off center, allowing the tenon from the solid brass leg to show through. This table comes in two parts which fit together perfectly to form a freestanding small table.
The wood top is finished with a natural wax and oil to allow the grain to show its natural beauty. The brass leg is made by a skilled metal artist who shapes the brass using only a lathe.
At Shizen Studio, every consideration is made to respect the earth and her inhabitants. Designs are produced by a network of skilled artisans and makers that share a commitment to the environment, local community and quality craftsmanship. Glues are water-based and non-toxic. No VOC finishes are made from botanically derived oils and beeswax. All packing materials are reusable, biodegradable and recyclable. Each design is intended to foster a sense of connection to the natural world.44

India Foster
India Foster designs furniture and objects for the home under the moniker Shizen Studio, which she founded in 2020. In Japanese, shizen means nature. Inspired by her subtropical surroundings, she works primarily with timber and stone she has found and reclaimed in Florida. She constructs each piece slowly and intentionally, revealing the personality of the material. Foster then accentuates these intrinsic contours and textures with clean lines and organic shapes. Her distinctive designs encourage people to appreciate the beauty of the natural world in their everyday life. With over 15 years experience as an interior designer, Foster is known for her sophisticated, sustainable style. She takes a holistic view of the built environment, using only carefully sourced materials and transparent fabrication practices. Her projects have been published in Veranda, Elle Decor, Traditional Home and House Beautiful. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Literature from Franklin University Switzerland. She is a member of the Female Design Council and the Good Future Design Alliance. Foster is also a passionate conservationist and avid surfer.

This table is made from petrified palm wood and solid bronze. The surface of the top is polished to reveal the intricate details and the bronze base plate is carefully cut to match the outline of the fossilized wood. I work with a metal artist to create each design by hand and each piece I create is completely unique with its own fossil top.
Petrified palm wood can be found in the southern states on the Gulf of Mexico, where palm trees grew millions of years ago along the coast. Some trees were submerged and fossilized to form excellent petrified specimens. These pieces were obtained from the Catahoula Formation. The bronze base is made by a skilled metal artist who shapes the bronze using only hand tools.
