This table is made from petrified palm wood and solid bronze. The surface of the top is polished to reveal the intricate details and the bronze base plate is carefully cut to match the outline of the fossilized wood. I work with a metal artist to create each design by hand and each piece I create is completely unique with its own fossil top. Petrified palm wood can be found in the southern states on the Gulf of Mexico, where palm trees grew millions of years ago along the coast. Some trees were submerged and fossilized to form excellent petrified specimens. These pieces were obtained from the Catahoula Formation. The Rio Mirror is made from a single piece of reclaimed Florida mahogany. The organic shape of the mirror complements the curves of the wood in its natural form. Every piece I make is unique. The finest mahogany grows only in the Caribbean and the southernmost reaches of Florida and is sadly endangered in the wild. This species can only be sourced by reclaiming (sub)urban trees or trees that fell naturally in the wild. The timber is milled locally in South Florida and cured for several years before it is ready for use. The design of each piece is informed by the natural shape and character of the wood.
