About the Item

From the "Children of the World" series. Anna Shesterikova's painting "Schö-Wüeschte" immerses the viewer in one of Switzerland's most archaic and poetic traditions—a winter ritual that takes place annually on January 13th in the villages of the half-canton Appenzell. At the center of the composition is ten-year-old Florian, participating for the first time in the ancient rite as Schö-Wüeschte mummer — "beautiful ugly." These characters embody the power of nature and the transition between the old and new years. Their image combines elements of beauty and wildness, civilization and the primitive world. The artist depicts the boy in a moment of inner concentration and almost sacred calm. His face—soft, still childlike—contrasts the heavy ritual attire. A leather belt with large bells is fastened to his chest; With every step, they create a deep hum, which, according to ancient beliefs, wards off the evil spirits of winter. Spruce branches rest on their shoulders, transforming the child into a forest spirit, a messenger of nature. The main symbol of the image is a Strohhaube straw hat, decorated with moss, spruce branches, and dried flowers. It becomes a kind of crown, connecting the person with the world of the earth, the forest, and ancient spirits. In the background is a winter landscape of Appenzell: a snow-covered valley, farmhouses, mountains... Florian's figure seems to emerge from the landscape itself, as part of a natural cycle. Shesterikova masterfully combines ethnographic precision and emotional depth in her painting. The texture of her brushstrokes evokes the rough texture of straw and tree bark. The warm ochre and copper tones of her costume contrast with the cold blue of the snow, creating a tension between the warmth of the human world and the harshness of nature. In this work, the artist speaks not only of folk tradition. Schö-Wüeschte is a painting about coming of age. Florian stands on the threshold of a new role: today, for the first time, he becomes part of an ancient male ritual, a chain of generations. The viewer begins to feel as if they can hear the distant ringing of bells, the crunch of snow underfoot, and drawn-out, wordless yodels... The painting becomes a visual testimony to how ancient pre-Christian rituals continue to live on in modern Switzerland, transforming the small Alpine village into a meeting place of the past and the present. Chuvash Amazon. Portrait of a girl, square, impressionism, children of the world

From the "Children of the World" series. In this expressive work, the artist explores the theme of cultural memory and feminine strength, embodied in the image of the young heroine. Sunlight softly reflects off the metal coins on the girl's chest ornament, transforming them into shimmering reflections. The painting's theme is connected to the traditional Chuvash spring festival of Akatuy. Today is a special day for the young Chuvash girl Asya: she will be participating for the first time in an ancient festive rite—a girls' round dance. She is dressed in a festive chalkha costume made of white fabric, adorned with scarlet and dark blue embroidery. The geometric patterns harken back to ancient symbols of fertility, the sun, water, and feminine power. On her chest is a bib covered with coins and metal plates that ring like small bells when moved. The tall, conical headdress, called a tukhya, reminiscent of an ancient helmet...
