Hexagonal vesta box designed by Asprey & Company. Very rare and unusual vesta matches box, created in Birmingham England by Asprey & Company Limited, back in the 1923. Crafted during the art deco period in a hexagonal shape in solid yellow gold of 9 karats, The six lateral sides are decorated with engine turned guilloche and the top and bottom in plain. Fitted on top with a hinged hexagonal push lid. Excellent craftmanship depicting an odd and geometric shape. Perfect condition with no dents or previous restorations. Weight: 45.95 Grams, (29.45 Dwt). Measurements: 56 mm by 52 mm by 16 mm (2.20 x 2.05 x 0.63 Inches). Hallmarks Stamped with British crown marks, the anchor mark for the city of Birmingham, the maker's mark A&Co Ltd., the mark .375 for the assay of the 9kt gold, the letter Y for the years 1923-1924 and signed, "ASPREY LONDON 8 .375 REG.584151 A&CO LTD Y". Asprey The company was established in England in Mitcham, Surrey, in 1781. Founded as a silk printing business by William Asprey, it soon became a luxury emporium. In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. In 1847, the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today. From its central London location, Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early specialty was dressing cases. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. As the business grew, the company acquired manufacturing facilities and hired silversmith, goldsmith, jewelers and watchmakers. In the 1920's, commissions poured in from around the world, from American millionaire J. P. Morgan to potentates such as the Maharaja of Patiala, who commissioned a huge teak travelling trunk for each of his wives, in which each trunk was fitted with solid silver washing and bathing utensils with waterspouts of ornate tiger head and lined with blue velvet. Enamel case designed by Strauss-Allard & Meyer for George Stockwell Exceptional art deco rectangular case, created in Paris France at the jewelry workshop atelier of Strauss Allard et Meyer, back in the 1925-1926. This piece has been carefully crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver with gilt interiors. It is decorated with geometric chinoiserie motifs typical from the period and embellished with applications on both sides of vivid red-orange lacquer. This beautiful box was made with chamfered edges and is fitted with an eight barrel hinge, a push lock and a hinged barrier with a spring. It is in mint condition with no trace of use or wear and can be easily used as a luxury presentation cards-box or as a very high end cigarette-case. Weight: 111.95 Grams, (71.76 Dwt). Measurements: 87.63 mm by 63.5 mm by 19 mm (3.45 x 2.5 by 0.75 Inches). Hallmarks: All parts are stamped with French and British marks; the Parisian maker's mark SAM associated to Strauss Allard & Meyer and the French national mark for the assay of the silver and signed. This stunning and rare box has been crafted for the Canadian jewelry house of Maison Birks, in a rectangular shape with geometric art deco patterns in solid .925/.999 sterling silver. Completely decorated with engine turning guilloche design and embellished with geometric elements decorated with black and red enamel. This is an especially very fine example for the collector, or a wonderful gift for someone special. Weight: 75.70 Grams, (48.53 Dwt). Maison Birks The Maison Birks, was a jewelry company founded in Canada as a Henry Birks & Sons in 1879. They still remains as one of the most popular jewelry companies in Canada for their remarkable and recognizable designs. Their most iconic 1960's designer was Walter Schluep and Antonio Cavelti. Birks Group traces its origins to the opening by Henry Birks of a small jewelery shop in Montreal in 1879. With an investment of CAD$3,000, Henry Birks opened in 1879 a small jewelery shop on Saint James Street in the heart of Montreal's financial and commercial district. In 1893, Birks entered into a partnership with his three sons (William, John and Gerald), and the name of the firm became Henry Birks and Sons. As the focus of Montreal's commercial Centre moved northward towards Saint Catherine Street, the Birks store moved to new premises on Phillips Square in 1894, where the company still maintains a store and corporate offices. Starting in 1901, Birks oversaw the expansion of the company across Canada, with stores opening in the country's largest cities. In some cases, it bought local jewelers, adding its name to the local one (the Birks store in Toronto was Birks-Ryrie and the one in Winnipeg was Birks-Dingwall).
