EL HUSSEIN FAWZI: (1905-1999). Born in Helmia district, Cairo on 4 September 1905, El Hussein Fawzi was known in Egypt and the Middle Eastern his pioneering work in the field of journalistic graphic arts. Fawzibegan his artistic studies in 1922 at the School of Fine Arts, studying oil painting. He won the first prize at an art competition for which he received an art fellowship in 1928 and entered the printing school in Paris, from which he received a lithography diploma in 1932. He also studied lithography at the Estienne School in Paris.
He was an artist and professor of oil painting before joining the ParisHigher School of Arts and Decoration from which he received a diploma in1933. Fawzi was also awarded an honorary degree for an oil painting exhibited at the 1939 French Salon. Although Fawzi’s fame was as an agraphic artist he also had an active career in the fine arts. Upon his return to Egypt, he founded the Department of Graphic Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts and later was appointed director of the department, a position he held until his retirement. He made lots of illustrations for two books by Naguib Mahfouz that were published in the Al Ahram newspaper and also made drawings of all the big mosques of Egypt that were publishedin two big books...

He remained much attached to his professor all through his life. In 1940 he meets Hussein Youssef Amin and the Group of Contemporary Art at the secondary school of Farouk First in Abasya district in Cairo when he was introduced to surrealism for the first time. In 1943 he becomes a student at the Faculty of Fine Arts and graduates with excellence and honors in 1947. In 1948 he becomes an assistant to the interior decoration section at the FFA. He is then sent to a mission in Paris in 1952 and he becomes a student to Paul Colin and A.Marie Cassandre for publicity and theatre design. He then moves to Rome in 1956 to study cinema design. In 1957 he received the international prize in painting from San Vito Romano, Italy, and obtains his Ph.D. from Centro Sperimental di Cinemato Grafia. Born in 1922 in Damietta, and in 1945 he got his degree from the Higher Institute of Educational Art. In 1947, he participated in establishing the influential Group of Modern Art. In 1949 he participated in the Egyptian exhibition in Paris. In 1950, he received the Full Bright award for studying art at Minnesota University. He then studied at Colombia University in NY and began exhibiting his work in NY and Minnesota from 1951-1952. He participated in 1953 in the Biennale of Sao Paulo in Brazil. Upon returning to Egypt in 1954, he became active in local and international exhibitions. In 1961, he was sent by the Egyptian government to receive his Ph.D. from Columbus University, Ohio. After, he started exhibiting his work in Columbus and Washington DC.
Y.Sida’s work at the start was mainly dealing with popular Egyptian themes. We can distinguish Sida’s work through his power of using primary colors in its purest form directly in the tubes without being mixed with other colors. Also, we can notice in his work a tendency towards the qualities and techniques of children’s art.
In his later years, Sida began experimenting with Arabic Calligraphy by concentrating on the forms and shapes that are dominant in the popular Egyptian motives and décor. We can witness the dynamism in his Arabic calligraphy work. Sida is also known for his huge murals...
