At first viewing, Egg Girl may come across as humorous, quirky, flippant or even clever. However, there may also be a deeper meaning in the work. The Egg Girl wants to be seen, but she does not want to reveal herself entirely. So, on a human level, Egg Girl is symbolic of the masks we wear, the devices we use to hide ourselves even as we reveal ourselves; to the world and to the judgement of others. How my Eggs came about. I wanted something to change my world, a painting that would make that happen. I wanted something I’d never seen before in the art world. I used to sit for hours late at night thinking about what to paint to make that change. It was Egg lady...

Located in Kolkata, West Bengal

K. G. Subramanyan - Untitled - 17 x 15 inches (unframed size) Ink on paper (Framed & Delivered) The artist gave the human figure a new dimension. Drawing upon the rich resources of myth, memory and tradition, Subramanyan tempers romanticism with wit and eroticism. Critic Geeta Kapur has stated that Subramanyan was deeply influenced by popular, modern, classical and indigenous traditions. No matter what the medium, be it handmade paper or acrylic sheet, his artistic practice has integrated fluid traditions so as to create a new lingua franca. The strokes that shape the faces and the little blobs, the vertical and horizontal drama all become like a choreographed symbolism that has a sense of play in line and length. Nothing is in excess, nothing is obnoxious but each stroke forms the finesse of versatile ventures. Style : K G Subramanyan was one of the leading artists who was part of India’s post-Independence search for identity through art. A writer, scholar, teacher and art historian, K G Subramanyan was prolific in his art, spanning the spectrum of mediums from painting to pottery, weaving, and glass painting. He believed in the value of Indian traditions and incorporated folklore, myth and local techniques and stories into his work. About the Artist and his work : Born : K G Subramanyan (1924-2016) was born in Kerala. Education : He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the Presidency College in Chennai. In 1948, he graduated from Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan, where he studied under the tutelage of Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij. In 1955, he received a British Council Research Fellowship to the Slade School of Art at the University of London. He was an inspiration to generations of students as a member of the Baroda M S Fine Arts Faculty. His focus there in later years was on terracotta and pottery. Shows : In a career spanning nearly seven decades, K G Subramanyan’s work has been exhibited in over fifty solo shows. Some of the solo shows are given below : 2014 - The Government Museum & Arts Gallery, Chandigarh. 2014 - Red Earth Gallery, Vadodara. 2018 - Art Musings, Mumbai, KG Subramanyan...

Saikat Patra - Untitled - 15 x 11 inches (unframed size) Watercolour on paper Style : Saikat Patra highly talented water colorist from Bengal. In this series of 10 water colour, Saikat traces few game changing moments in India. From invasion / war to coronation, from spirituality to education Saikat beautifully traces few important moments from Historical India. In order of the series of the events : a) Buddha with Angulimalla : ( 600 – 400 BC ) When Buddha's teaching resonated with the people and the ruthless serial killer redeemed and converted himself to follow the principle of Buddhism. b) Ashoka surveying the Sarnath Pillar : (400 – 200 BC) The Mauryan empire reached the peak of its extent under the rule of Ashoka(reign : 273-232 BCE).Here King Ashoka is scene looking at the Lion Capital of Ashoka, a sculpture of four Asiatic Lions; a graphic representation of which was adopted as the official Emblem of India in 1950. c) Questions of Milinda : (200 – 100 BC) Depicts the Questions of Milinda, a Buddhist text which record a dialogue Buddhist Sage Nagasena and the Indo - Greek King Menander who is set to have converted after meeting Sage Nagasina. d) The Kushan Kings encouraged all religions : One of the most interesting aspects of the Kushan empire is its spirit religious toleration. A broad pantheon of dieties on Kushan coins indicates that the empire was characterized by tremendous religious toleration. We find on Kushan coins, Greek Gods such as Helios and Salene, Iranian gods such as Nana, Mithra , Mao and Athsho, Hindu gods such as Shiva and Kartikeya, the Zoroastrian deity Ahura Mazda and the Buddha. The drawings shown above are also powerful evidence of the syncretic nature of many of the deities which were worshipped from different traditions. e) Gupta Empire : India’s Golden Age Kalidasa : ( 5th century AD ) Poet and playwright Vatsyayana : ( 3rd - 6th century AD) Author of the Kama Sutra Aryabhata : ( 5th century AD ) Mathematician, astronomer The peace and prosperity created under the leadership of the Guptas enabled the pursuit of scientific and artistic endeavours. This period was marked by extensive inventions and discoveries in science & technology, engineering, art, literature, mathematics, astronomy, religion, and philosophy that crystallized the elements of what is known as the Golden Age of India. f) Shiva as a dancing Nataraja, Badami : ( 600 – 750 AD ) The period of Badami Chalukyas the first cave portrays the Tandava-dancing Shiva...

Illusion Watch, Pen & Ink on Paper, Black by Modern Indian Artist “In Stock”

By Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya

Located in Kolkata, West Bengal

Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya - Untitled - (unframed size) Pen & Ink on Paper , 11 x 8 inches , 2009 (Delivered) One of the most popular series of the Master Artist, The Golden Flute is the artists more romantic renedition of Art. The iconic figures of Krishna, Radha, and Ganesha that found lyrical expression in the Icons series are modern representations and sophisticated idealizations of the same images in the popular media. Krishna is a cosmic musician, and the tune he creates by playing his transcendental flute is embodied with cosmic energy. When Krishna is depicted as being between the age of 5 and 8, it is always with his flute. Therefore, during this period, he is aptly called Murlidhara (murali means “flute,” and dhara means “hold”), signifying the one who holds the flute. He is never without it, whether he is with his mother, on the grazing grounds with his herd of cows, among his cowherd companions or roaming around on the Jamuna banks. Gopis lose their selves in this tune. For them, music becomes the voice of love, which is too passionate and secretive. Style : The city of Kolkata has always figured prominently in his work. His themes come from his personal interactions with its urban milieu - its sickness and sordidness, its violence and vulnerability and all that compounds its existential agony. Shuvaprasanna has depicted varying moods of the city and its people, its places, and all its facets that make the city distinctive. He doesn't merely portray reality as 'matter of fact' and his presentation of reality often has dream-like elements in it. In terms of technique, Shuvaprasanna boasts a precise, finely executed style that yields an unmistakable visual intensity. He works comfortably in an assortment of media, including oil on canvas, charcoal, and mixed media. About the Artist and his work : Born : In Calcutta, 1947. Education : Graduated from Indian College of Art (R.B. University, Calcutta) in 1969. Exhibitions : Shuvaprasanna has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Tao Art Gallery and at the Chawla Art Gallery, Square One Mall. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including 'ABODE' sold at Waddington's 'Fine Prints & Photography Auction' in 2014. There have been many articles about Shuvaprasanna, including 'An exclusive edifice' written by Kunal Ray for The Hindu in 2014.
