It is in excellent condition, the frame have very small minor restorations, practically invisible. About the artist: Howard Rogers wanted to be an artist for as long as he could remember. "I had no idea what an artist was when I was a kid," he laughs. "But I had a distant cousin who had gone to art school and I saw some of his drawings. They really impressed me." Born and raised in San Diego, California, Rogers now focuses on the future: "I kind of enjoy today and tomorrow and to heck with yesterday." While in high school, Rogers took some art classes and served as an apprentice sign painter, eventually becoming a journeyman. He was also a member of his high school track team, competing in the high jump, the hurdles and cross-country, as well as doing some bike racing. Following a stint in the Army, he began training for the Olympics in bike racing, trying out in 1948, 1952 and 1956. Today, "I ride a stationary bike in front of my easel three times a week." About the artist. Self-taught painter of figurative painting. At eleven years old, it was the Great War and his Certificate of Studies in his pocket, he first worked in the fields of the village farms, then until he was 17, he was employed at the Coeuvres distillery where he is responsible for the proper functioning of the machines. In 1925 he did his military service at the barracks of St Vincent de Laon (Aisne) in the 101st heavy artillery regiment as a pointer brigadier, and he was already drawing on notebooks. At the end of his service, having chosen to go to Paris to take drawing and painting lessons, he became a cashier at the Grand Magasins du Louvre. He begins to discover Paris, its districts, its buildings, shops, churches. During the week he sets up his easel on the sidewalks of Montmartre, Notre Dame, where the Latin Quarter and on Sundays, he sells these paintings on Boulevard Raspail. He took part in the Battle of France in September 1939at june 1940. He testifies in a notebook of the events and emotions he has gone through. After the Second World War, he set up his home and studio in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, but he remained very attached to his native village where he went very regularly. Married, he takes his family almost every summer to the Côte d'Azur where he paints with great pleasure the warm colors and the intense light of the Esterel or the Var coast. He participates in many Parisian salons and exhibitions in Paris and province. Awarded at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1961, as well as at the Salon Violet in Paris. From 1967, Mrs. Rosenthal of the Galerie Haussmann (Paris), regularly exhibited her works on "Old Paris" which particularly appealed to British and American tourists. About the artist: Victor Thall belongs to that unique American brand of rugged individualist. Working closely for a time with such painters as Gorky and de Kooning, Thall wasn't content to join the burgeoning American clique of Abstract Expressionism. Instead, on the eve of its international recognition, he abandoned New York, making a worldwide tour of indigenous cultures attempting to find a solution to the crisis of abstraction. Thall felt that painting needed to communicate in a way that Abstract Expressionism could not. Using parts of its vocabulary, Thall created work that was modern in spirit but based on fundamental traditions that he believed connected the whole history of art. In this way he resembled his contemporary Max Beckman, and it is fitting that Thall was chosen with Beckman by The New Yorker art critic Robert Coates as the best painter of the 1949 Whitney Annual. Fiercely uncompromising in his opinions, Thall sadly fell into obscurity in his later years. Yet it was a willful obscurity. But America does eventually honor her difficult individualists, even if sometimes years after their deaths. Victor Thall was born in New York in 1902. He studied at the Art Students League under Arthur B. Davies, George Bellows, George Luks, and John Sloan. Further studies were at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He left for Paris in 1924 continuing his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Julien. Returning to the United States in the early 1930's, he became friendly with Willem de Kooning and Arshile Gorky. He participated in the WPA New Deal Art Project of New York City between 1935 and 1939. He taught at the Art Students League in the late forties and was represented in the Whitney Annual of 1949 and 1950. His paintings are in numerous private collections in the United States and Europe. This artwork titled "Near Tubac, Arizona" c.1960 is an oil painting on canvas by noted southwestern artist Sid Cedargreen, 1904-2011. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist. The canvas size is 22 x 30 inches, framed size is 28.5 x 36.5 inches. Framed in original wooden beige and gold frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Sid Cedargreen was a mid-century painter whose art beautifully depicted the desert Southwest. In 1958, Mr. Cedargreen was part of an art collective that transformed Tubac into an art colony. While in Tubac, he founded the Tubac Center for the Arts and the Santa Cruz Art Association. During this time, he was the winner of the distinguished Master Mead award for depicting the Southwest. His paintings are beautiful landscapes featuring areas in Arizona and all around the American Southwest. He continued to live in Arizona and paint its beauty for several years. In 2011, Sid Cedargreen passed away at the age of 89. After he passed away, Mr. Cedargreen's family found a plethora of paintings that Cedargeen had been storing in his house. In his career as an artist, Mr. Cedargreen had many one-man shows, in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tucson, Nogales, and Tubac, and in Santa Barbara, and Palm Desert, California; in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Ogunquit, Maine and in Taos, Deming, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has exhibited in the Camelback Galleries and Adrian Shaw Galleries in Scottsdale; the Hilltop Art Gallery in Nogales; the Fountains Gallery in Tucson; the Plaza Gallery and the Taos Inn in Taos; the Shop of the Rainbow Man in Santa Fe; the Old Town Book Shop in Wickenburg; the Santa Barbara Biltmore...
