Although the theme does not exist in the Gospels, it was often mentioned in contemporary devotional literature. Indeed, during the first half of the 14th century, mystical thought and devotional practices changed under the impulse of a number of religious, among them Heinrich Suso and St Bridget. In his writings, Suso placed important emphasis on contemplation and meditation in the footsteps of Christ's martyrdom. A collection of five Empoli amber glass pieces produced by the Stelvia Glass Workshop in Italy during the 1950s–1960s. Three of the decanters are attributed to designs by American glass artist Wayne Husted, created for the American market. Two examples retain the “Made in Italy” mark often associated with these exports. The group includes four decanters with stoppers and one apothecary or candy jar. All pieces are handmade using the pressed or molded glass technique characteristic of Empoli production, and feature the warm amber tone typical of Stelvia glass from this period. Condition is very good overall. One stopper has a small hairline crack at the base, which is stable and barely visible unless closely examined. Splendid murano mosaic vase with a perfect color combination and complex mosaic technique. The stellato finish is made by rolling canes of various color over a small blob of incandescent glass. The design is attained by using the glass scissors at the end and making flat discs with a star design. All these are then heated on a flat surface, in the old time was a stone so this technique still carries that name, lavorazione a piera. It's heated so that it becomes an unique mosaic rectangular piece. It's then rolled with a glass disc that has the exact perimeter of the rectangular side. This makes the name that this technique is internationally known, Roll-up technique. The difficulty is to close into a cylinder the two other sides of the rectangle.
