The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The brown, earth toned sea oats are laid in a linear pattern on a wood panel with a surface of green encaustic and then sealed with clear wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process. The piece is lightweight and hangs on one d-ring. About the artist and her work: After moving to the rural town of Stone Ridge, NY seventeen years ago and starting a 4-acre botanical garden with her husband, mixed media artist, Allyson Levy, has found endless inspiration in the plant kingdom that surrounds her. The garden itself, named “Hortus Conclusus”, consisting of thousands of rare plants and edibles, remains at the epicenter of Levy’s art making. Since the pandemic, this focus has become ever more apparent as her new acrylic paintings on paper demonstrate her intuitive process of reinterpreting literal subjects like leaves, flowers, birds, or bugs into vibrant worlds of layered color. She begins by drawing from life but then allows fluctuating colors, traces of the hand, and evidence of the physical medium to be introduced as the composition evolves and finds its final imprint on the surface. The spontaneity of her process welcomes the unknown, she explains: “The things that moved me first…might have become by now just a faint whispering. But I know that a story is being told, even if I don’t understand yet all the words.” About the artist: Anne Francey was born in 1956 in Grandson, Switzerland. She attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (ECBA) from 1976 to 1981, where she received a diploma of Fine Arts in painting. In 1981, she moved to New York where she attended the School of Visual Arts and the graduate program of Fine Arts at Hunter College. She graduated in 1987 with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Poland (Glider) by Andrea Moreau colored pencil and postage stamp on paper 22 x 30 inches 25.25 x 32.5 inches framed To create her mixed-media artworks, Andrea Moreau selects a postage stamp to serve as the starting point for a piece on paper, then “completes” the image with colored pencil. This artwork, "Poland (Glider)," centers on a stamp that depicts an aircraft flying above a glacial horizon. Building on the style and environment established by the stamp art, Moreau extended this scene across land and sea in vibrant blue pencil. A statement by the artist: My drawings function as personal interpretations of political or commercial propaganda. I begin with imagery found on postage stamps or printed advertisements and, using the visual logic and graphic language of the image, I attempt to tease out a larger framework from which to consider it. Finished pieces often incorporate printed matter and cultural detritus, which gives them an immediate and tactile connection to the world of objects. I am particularly interested in the postage stamp as a geographical artifact, and through my drawing process I attempt to learn something about a place by studying its official imagery and then creating a world beyond the borders of its fragmentary scenes. The finished drawings and paintings are a record of this study; they are a dialogue between the printed and the drawn, the official and the personal, the real and the imaginary. They are a metaphor for the way in which we conjure the places we hear about on the news and read about in books, using the tiniest pieces of information to construct a reality that most likely bears little resemblance to any actual place. Andrea Moreau’s mixed-media works, on the other hand, walk a tightrope between context and isolation. Moreau selects a postage stamp to serve as the starting point for a piece on paper, then “completes” the image with colored pencil. These stamps may become lost in a frenzy of Moreau’s mark-making, as with “Mexico (Flowers) #15,” or left comically obvious, like in “USA (Barbershop...
