His ongoing series of large-scale kites bridge the gap between flat art and sculpture, each crafted of split bamboo frames covered with stretched muslin and a collage of vintage ephemera – including kimonos, obis, paintings, scrolls, drawings, metal leaf, bleeding paper, book pages, or anything with a story to tell. In this bamboo kite entitled “Ikebana,” Thompson beautifully layers darkly saturated fragments atop pages of found text. A repurposed calligraphy scroll panels the left side, brushed with black ink with full flower blossoms and leafy foliage, while delicate pine branches grow upwards from the bottom. Nick Weddell Mother Pot stoneware and glaze 14 x 16 x 16" 2020 signed under glaze Nick Weddell is a sculptor from Austin, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from Texas State University (2016) and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2019). Weddell creates metamorphosed versions of everyday objects ranging from cups to armchairs in order to catalyze a celebration of that which is and a challenge to seek that which could be. Weddell’s work is an arbiter of progress, a wrecking ball of convention, and above all a harbinger of joy.
