Peter Stephens "Rio" Acrylic and Collage on Wood
By Peter Stephens
Located in New York, NY
"I marvel at the fundamental forces of nature, the laws that determine the structure and behavior of matter, the ways and means of how the world looks the way it does. This interest in the science of the natural world led me to read deeply into the physics behind mechanisms of pattern generation. My painting language is based in these wonderments of systems and outcomes and the mathematics that describe them. These new paintings take form with an underlying grid of commercial paint sample cards. This allows me a spontaneous, interchangeable surface to explore color relationships and interactions within given parameters. The layers of acrylic matrix elements come next, all handwork applied line by line. As with numbers in equations, the quantities, sequences, repetitions, and rhythms all contribute to a rich optical blend of color combinations. A given set of colors results in an exponential number of different perceptions. Along with these pure abstractions of form and color come cultural references to histories of art and design with immediate associations to sumptuous textiles and complex architectural mosaics. The evolution of this work is ongoing, it will change and develop as each new mutation moves the morphology forward. These paintings are not illustrations of specific laws that shape the universe and ourselves but an artist’s answer to their implicit resonances. The paintings translate scientific inspirations into a visual, multilayered landscape that in layer after layer enfold one gradient of reality on another." - Peter Stephens

Published by Probst, Johann Friedrich, 1721-1781 Augsburg. Copper etching print; hand-colored; - condition: Printed on 2 sheets joined together; size (in cm) 38 x 104; Large and very decorative view of Vienna with numbering of the important houses and buildings. The Werner / Probst views are distinguished by the their large size that allows considerable architectural and landscape detail, extending to the delineation of farm buildings, boats and individual trees. Each includes a numbered key identifying important sites and buildings. Friedrich Bernhard Werner was a German printmaker, draftsman and writer of chronicles; Bénézit states he was born in Reichenau, other sources indicate Silesia. As a young man he lived an itinerant and rather bohemian existence as a writer, translator and working in theater. Eventually he settled in Augsburg, where he drew views for the publishing houses of a Martin Engelbrecht...

Tree Farm, Long Lane, East Hampton, NY, 1999
By Robin Rice
Located in Hudson, NY
Edition 7 of 25 After 30 years on West 11th Street, The Robin Rice Gallery celebrates its first ever exhibition for Robin Rice. For decades, Robin has exhibited a wide variety of photographers at the gallery but never her own work. As the show’s title denotes, “It’s About Time.” The opening reception will be held on Wednesday, January 23rd from 6pm to 8pm. The exhibit runs through March 17, 2019. While her photography spans five decades and multiple continents, Rice maintains a cohesive, candid voice that carries throughout all of her work. Observing the world around her in a cinematic way, she possesses an uncanny ability to recognize and capture moments of beauty and the spontaneity of the human spirit. By evoking a wonderstruck sensibility, Rice expresses a deep-rooted love for both people and landscapes using her distinct bohemian style. In this salon-style retrospective, Rice uses an “old school” approach and shoots with her Nikon on Tri-X film. When creating her art, she insists, “the camera has a mind of its own.” The scenes captured in her photography are unedited and thus born purely from the magic of the in-camera composition. In the invitational image, “Tree Farm...

Damien Hirst Spin Painting (Damien Hirst shark spin painting)
By Damien Hirst
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Damien Hirst Spin Painting 2009: A mesmerizing Damien Hirst Spin painting with explosions of vivid color amidst the timeless, mysterious form of a shark. This Damien Hirst Spin painting originates from Hirst’s ‘Spin Workshop’ - a public event hosted by the artist to celebrate the opening of his heralded 2009 exhibition: ‘Requiem’ at the PinchukArtCentre, Ukraine. Acrylic on paper. 2009. 19.25 x 26.5 inches. Excellent overall condition. Unique; one of. Features a stamped (printed) signature on the reverse and inscription: © Damien Hirst. A beautifully rendered Damien Hirst painting defined by strong colors, classic Hirst motifs & a unique overall presence. Artist Bio: Damien Hirst is a British Conceptual artist known for his controversial take on beauty and found-art objects. Along with Liam Gillick, Tracey Emin, and Sarah Lucas, Hirst was part of the Young British Artists movement that rose to prominence in the early 1990s. “I have always been aware that you have to get people listening before you can change their minds,” he reflected. “Any artist's big fear is being ignored, so if you get debate, that's great.” Born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Hirst was raised in Leeds. As a student at Goldsmiths College in London, his work caught the eye of the collector and gallerist Charles Saatchi, who became an early patron. Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)—a large vitrine containing an Australian tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde—was financed by Saatchi and helped to launch the artist’s career. Hirst went on to win the coveted Turner Prize in 1995. In 2012, he showed what went on to be one of his most controversial work in decades, the installation In and Out of Love, which consisted of two white windowless rooms in which over 9,000 butterflies flitted around and died. In 2015 Hirst opened the Newport Street Gallery in London, which grew from his long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom. His works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery in London, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Rubell Family Collection in Miami. "Interior Scene with Figure" Expressionistic Style Oil Painting on Masonite
By Michael Baxte
Located in New York, NY
A strong modernist oil painting depicted in 1969 by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his bold still life paintings, with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. This piece is from later in his career, but we can feel this underlying style throughout. Art measures 21.75 x 18 inches Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City. Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. Since for the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient light of science.” By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett...

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...

DeVilbiss Purfume Art Deco Poster by George Petty for the A.C. Schultz Company
Located in New York, NY
This beautiful Art Deco poster was realized by the esteemed American Artist George Petty for the A.C. Schultz Company in 1926. The work is an advertisement for DeVilbiss Perfume, which depicts a "Petty Girl" (as they came to be known) in the center of the composition floating in a pentagonal black color block. With short cropped silvery white hair and red lipstick, the female figure in center (suggestive of a stylized flapper) squeezes the atomizer of her perfume bottle misting herself in fragrance. Skyscraper style geometric forms suggesting elaborately faceted gemstones- in hues of rose, lavender, orange sapphire and yellow diamond- explode around her, suggesting the stage design for the set of the iconic film "Metropolis". The top of the composition features a bronze color block reading "DeVilbiss Perfume sprays" and in scrolling Deco lettering text reads “A drop of perfume bursting into myriad atoms of fragrance makes the use of perfume an added delight” near the bottom of the piece. Additionally, there is a solid black color block with crystalline black forms emanating outwards at the base of the composition, as well as a geometric abstract form on the right side of the piece imbuing it with a distinctly modernist inflection. With its quintessentially Art Deco sensibility, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of the period as well as those with a distinct appreciation for unusual (and stunning) fine art pieces. its vibrant palate and clean modernist lines make this piece a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Deco to contemporary. The piece comes presented in a custom gallery frame and is in excellent vintage condition. George Petty was an American illustrator known for his series of pin-ups known as "Petty Girls" which he created for Esquire magazine. The Petty Girl were coquettish women whose legs were elongated to create idealized female forms. They were featured on magazine centerfolds, billboards, and calendars for companies such as Ridgid Tools. Born George Brown Petty IV on April 27, 1894 in Abbeville, LA, Petty received his formal training at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago under Ruth Van Sickle Ford...
