French Neoclassical Brass Guéridon Center Table Black Granite Top and Paw Feet

By Maison Charles-Jansen

Located in Essex, MA

French Neoclassical Brass Guéridon Center Table with Black Granite Top and Paw Feet, 20th Century, Maison Jansen Style A striking French Neoclassical guéridon table in the manner of Maison Jansen, dating to the mid-to-late 20th century, executed with exceptional attention to the Empire and Directoire sources that inspired so much of the great French decorative furniture of the postwar period. The combination of polished brass, black stone, and paw feet places this table squarely within the tradition of the finest Parisian interior furnishings, and it would integrate seamlessly into both a period grand salon and a boldly conceived contemporary interior. The circular top is inset with a panel of highly polished black granite or black glass — deep, lustrous, and reflective — encased within a brass gallery rim enriched with fine gadrooning or rope-twist detailing, a classically derived ornamental device that elevates the profile of the top and lends crispness to the silhouette. Below, three elegantly swept brass legs curve outward in a lyrate form, terminating in finely cast lion's paw feet — one of the most enduring motifs of the Empire repertoire and a mark of quality in French metalwork. The legs are united by a central stretcher supporting a smaller circular black shelf, both functional and visually anchoring the composition. The brass throughout retains a rich warm tone with natural aging, neither over-polished nor tarnished, presenting in an ideal antique market condition. A supremely versatile and sophisticated piece suitable as a center table, lamp table, or drinks table. Condition: Very good; brass with warm patina; black top surface excellent. Keywords: French guéridon table, brass center table, Maison Jansen style table, Neoclassical brass table, Empire style table, black granite top table, lion paw feet table...

Located in Atlanta, GA

**Set of 5 French Porcelain Ornithological Dessert Plates Nast Factory, Paris, Early 19th Century** A refined and rare matched set of five ornithological dessert plates by the esteemed *Manufacture de Nast*, Paris, dating to the early 19th century. Each plate is finely painted with a unique exotic bird specimen, identified in elegant script to the reverse—*Le Guêpier de France*, *Aninga de Caienne*, *Le Sacre, femelle*, *Le Chirurgien ou Jacana du Brésil*, and *Pie-Grieche rouge*—and centered within a meticulously rendered arboreal setting. These depictions likely derive from contemporary natural history engravings, in keeping with the period’s neoclassical fascination with scientific exploration and taxonomy. The wide border is richly decorated with an incised and gilt stylized fern or palm frond motif, elegantly encircling the cavetto and highlighted with a burnished gilt rim. The ornithological scenes are executed with exceptional detail, attesting to the skill of the Nast atelier’s painters and gilders. Each plate bears the red printed mark *Nast à Paris...

Pair of French Louis XVI Style Cut-Crystal and Gilt-Metal Candelabra, Circa 1880
Pair of French Louis XVI Style Cut-Crystal and Gilt-Metal Candelabra, Circa 1880

Pair of French Louis XVI Style Cut-Crystal and Gilt-Metal Candelabra, Circa 1880

Located in Atlanta, GA

A finely decorative pair of late 19th century French or Continental cut-crystal and gilt-metal candelabra, conceived in the Louis XVI Revival taste and reflecting the brilliant decorative vocabulary of the Belle Époque interior. Each candelabrum is composed with a shaped cut-crystal standard rising from a radiating scalloped circular base, the glass worked with alternating fluted, diamond-cut, and crosshatched panels that catch and refract light with strong prismatic effect. The central upright finial is similarly faceted, lending height and architectural presence to the form. The gilt-metal arms extend in scrolling foliate branches, terminating in three crystal candle cups or bobeches dressed with faceted crystal bead swags and elongated pendant drops. The combination of clear cut glass, dark metal pinning, and warm gilt-metal mounts follows the historic French taste for ormolu-mounted crystal lighting, recalling the refinement of late 18th century neoclassical candelabra while incorporating the more theatrical sparkle favored in the late 19th century. The floral and foliate arms, scalloped crystal bases, cut-glass finials, and profusion of suspended prisms make the pair especially suitable for use as mantel candelabra...

In the Calm, Oil Painting
In the Calm, Oil Painting

In the Calm, Oil Painting

By Gary Leonard

Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Gary Leonard juxtaposes a realistic figure clothed in a floral dress against a dreamy background that hints at a wild garden. The spotlight heightens her reserved gesture and timid expression while giving her skin a soft glow. Shadows on her face, neck, and body create a striking contrast to the lighter tones of the composition. "This work creates an atmosphere of calm, blending the woman's soft countenance and pastel greens of nature. "

About the Artist
Through composition, color, texture and more, Gary Leonard celebrates beauty. His works start with the subject, but then he lets the work evolve into a more complex composition. Oftentimes, he enjoys merging figures with abstract images and varying textures. He hopes that his works will leave the viewer with a sense of warmth and peace. When he's not making art, he enjoys listening to music and learning how to play the piano.
