Charles Culver Watercolor Landscape "Red Hills Near Patzcurao" Signed & Dated

The idyllic atmosphere of this Mexican scene is located in Mexico, west of Mexico City and south of Guadalajara. “Red Hills Near Patzcuaro” is set in a golden light. and was one of three paintings by the artist while the artist visited Patzcuaro, Mexico. The humans depicted lend an atmosphere to the painting and an indication of location - dressed in native Mexican peasant dress - without being obtrusive and causing the viewer to concentrate on them. The intense red hills of Patzcuaro are the feature in this painting along with the pinon and juniper trees and the Chamisa shrub. This piece has been professionally reframed with acid-free matting and museum glass.
In a 1952 Detroit Free Press article, entitled “Artist Explains His Work,” Culver was asked why he painted the way he did. He stated: “I try to ‘see’ though not too exactly; I try to think though not too ponderously; I feel emotion yet I try not to become overwrought. I interpret rather than describe, and design rather than depict. I work with values, not light and shade; hence, when I am successful, I achieve substance rather than three-dimensional form, and this satisfies me as being wholly sufficient. In my work I wish to be serious without becoming a bore, exuberant without being frivolous, humorous without being silly. I believe that good paintings are conceived, not contrived; and I am interested in art much more than in pictures.”

Inspiration for this triptych work is derived from a photograph made in Iceland and Norse origin mythology. Borr was the husband of Bestia and they had three sons Odin, Vili, and Ve. According to the legend, these three sons made heaven and earth. The Schinkel's work has underpinnings from a photograph they made at sunset from behind Icelandic waterfall Seljalandsfoss. The artists use of color fields gives rise to new beginnings and sparks timeless majestic feelings.
The artists use their original artists process to achieve the illusion of three dimensions on 2D aluminum sheet metal. This mixed media work was made with the original artist process known known as Metalagram®. It was developed at the intersection of art + science, and old world skills + 21st century technology. The artists create sculpturally in layers rendering the dimensional interactive appearance viewers experience. The Metalagram® works appear differently from 180 degree vantage points and at varying angles of incidence as photons dance across the work.

Herb Babcock known as a Michigan Glass Artist began as a metal sculptor. He studied glass blowing in 1969 and created a series of Glass Image Vessels in 1974. Eventually he began to combine metal and glass in sculpture. The Pillared Series, which includes glass, steel and stone, began in 1989.
Herb received both his BFA and his MFA in Sculpture: his bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his master’s from the Cranbrook Academy of Art Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), and Morris Brose...
