Deconstructed

Deconstructed

By Robert McCauley

Located in Bozeman, MT

This whimsically tall painting is a portrait of a black bear. There is a golden blue sky with clouds behind the bear's head. "Deconstructed" is hand written on the light gold frame. The painting is done in oils, and the frame is included with the painting. Biography Robert McCauley was born and raised in Mt. Vernon, Washington. He graduated from Western Washington University in 1969, and received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Washington State University in 1972. Throughout his career, McCauley has earned many prestigious awards including a Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1982 and the Illinois Arts Council in 1999. McCauley also enjoyed a long and distinguished career as professor and Chairman of the Art Department at Rockford College in Illinois. Robert McCauley has created a mode of realism that is haunting and full of ambiguity. His distinctive animals manage to seem literal and symbolic at the same time, the viewer is suspended between these realms. Wild Life "We are losing our relationship with Nature. I aspire to re-tether some of the connections." -Robert McCauley Robert McCauley is an important 21st century American artist, and history will remember him as such. But in order to understand why, we first must consider where he is from and how he got here. A little less than a decade ago, McCauley was featured at a major exhibition in Chicago and he was quoted as saying then, "I think you spend all your life trying to find the right form for the content you have within you." Urban, Midwestern visitors who viewed the show were enthralled. Make no mistake about the source of McCauley's inner content: He is a product of America's greatest forest-the mighty aboriginal stands of fir, spruce, cedar and redwoods growing in the Pacific Northwest. Those skyscraping canopies once reservoired a breathtaking array of ecological richness and diversity, from streams choked with spawning salmon to massive grizzliesl wapiti and deer haunting the understories, raptors screeching through the misty, arboreal heavens, and the loom of an ever-present ocean. As the totem poles and amulets of native peoples attest, the life forces of nature there are planted indelibly into the human psyche. Robert McCauley's too. When I think of where McCauley fits into American art, as a contemporary painter, sculptor and naturalistic interpreter, I place him in the same philosophical tribe as Walton Ford, Alexis Rockman, Annie Coe...

Great Crested Grebe (after Duranti)

By Shelley Reed

Located in Bozeman, MT

This is a unframed painting and is painted in the influence of the artist Duranti. This painting is oil on paper, and is monochromatic black. Reed's primary focus has been the rich vein of Northern European art from the mid-17th through 18th centuries, a period of enlightenment and profound interest in science, nature, and the animal world. Animals were assigned human traits (peacock:vanity; dog:fidelity), and nature itself was considered a symbol of God...

Rooted in observation and fueled by a curiosity about the behavior of objects and handicraft processes, Carly Glovinski makes paintings, sculpture and works on paper that often teeter between representation and abstraction. Letting craft techniques like weaving inform her mark making, her work mimics everyday objects and highlights geometric pattern and structure found in textiles, while exploring the resourceful attitudes associated with domestic craft and rural communities that prioritize placemaking in concert with nature. She received her BFA from Boston University in 2003 and is represented by Morgan Lehman Gallery...

Sarah Winkler is a British born, American contemporary landscape painter who has lived most of her life abroad in countries such as Malawi, Africa and Brunei, Borneo. She has lived in the US since 1989 and has spent over two decades living and working in California and Colorado. She studied Art and Earth Science at William Paterson University and combines both subjects in her landscape and environmental artworks. The artist is best known for her monumentally scaled, color rich, luminous paintings that interpret the geological storied past and eventful present of the formation of the American wilderness landscape. She incorporates ground water, crushed rock and materials from the landscape in her paintings to create moments of connection, exploration and discovery. Winkler has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally in galleries, regional museums and art fairs since 2004. Her work was recently showcased at the LA Art Fair, Art Aspen and the Jackson Hole Art Fine Art Fair. In 2019, Winkler was selected by US Ambassador, John Pommersheim and the curators of the Art in Embassies program to participate in a 3-year International exhibition at the Ambassador’s residence in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Winkler was also invited to exhibit at the Colorado Governor’s Residence in Denver. Her artworks are in many private, public and corporate collections. He has exhibited his work extensively throughout the United States, with numerous solo and group exhibitions, including shows curated by gallery owner Linda Durham and artist Joel Peter Witkin. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, most recently the Professional Development Grant from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History. Also a professor, Stuckey has taught at West Virginia University, and most recently, Colorado State University. Tracy and his wife, artist Erika Osborne, live in Fort Collins, Colorado. "My paintings operate in a fictitious world that utilizes the mythologies and realities of the modern American West. Because of its unique history, the Western United States is more than just a location; it is a label, a persona and most importantly a cultural identity. The word "Western" is a category; it is used to describe films, literature, music, art, and fashion. In my work I use the cowboy and cowgirl and other stereotypical Western themes coupled with pop cultural depictions of the region to reflect my own interpretations of the contemporary West. I am interested in historian Michael Johnson...

The Watchers

By Travis Walker

Located in Bozeman, MT

For the last 10 years Travis Walker has made landscape paintings about Jackson Hole, a place that never ceases to inspire him to pick up his brushes. He works on location, capturing the essence of the seemingly mundane scenes around town: an old salon, a decaying house with a fence made of skis, a vintage trailer park. His work is influenced by the work of American regionalists Edward Hopper and Grant Wood, Japanese printmaking, and German Expressionism. Travis Walker is the founder and director of Teton Artlab, a nonprofit arts organization that provides studio space for artists. He was born in 1976 in Tokyo, Japan, and earned his BFA in Painting and Printmaking in 2000 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Recent group exhibitions include the 2012 Western Visions Show and Sale and the 2013 and 2012 Takin' It to the Streets Art Fair, among many others. I Was Just Getting Groceries

I Was Just Getting Groceries

By Casey McGlynn

Located in Bozeman, MT

This mixed media painting focuses on alien spaceships taking people, presumably as they are getting their groceries. Flying saucers abduct horses, musicians, and mediators alike in a red beam. Birds, horses, and rhinos also roam the painting. The painting's main colors are blues, oranges, reds, and yellows with black accents. Casey McGlynn grew up in rural Ontario, where he would sit in front of the television and draw on old grocery bags and scrap paper tirelessly, creating self-taught surrealist pop art. McGlynn attended the Ontario College of Art and Design, however, he was not enrolled in the visual arts. McGlynn’s work contains reoccurring symbols such as animals from his upbringing, birds from his studio window sill and numbers that derive from when he memorized math tables in his early years. McGlynn’s work is as much about revealing the truth and expressing emotions as it is about documenting actual fact. His paintings reach into a wealth of historical influence and skill. Creating symphonic glyphs on rudimentary, raw quilt-like patterns, the works simultaneously evoke rural Southern quilts...
