20th Century Spanish Seaside Village (Cadaques Catalonia), Cleveland School

By Rolf Stoll

Located in Beachwood, OH

Rolf Stoll (American, 1892-1978) Spanish Seaside Village (Cadaques Catalonia) Oil on canvas Signed lower right 28 x 38 inches Exhibited: The 11th Annual May Show, Cleveland Museum of Art, 1929 Rolf Stoll, a painter of figure subjects, landscapes and floral still lifes, was an important member of the Cleveland art scene during the second quarter of the century. He was also an influential teacher, as well as one of Ohio’s foremost portrait painters. Rolf Stoll was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1892. As a boy, he attended a military academy, during which time he developed an interest in art. He received his early formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He emigrated to the United States in 1912, settling in New York City. A decade later, after studying at the school of the National Academy of Design and supporting himself by working as a commercial artist, Stoll decided to leave New York. Upon the recommendation of Warren Pryor, one of his teachers, he decided to move to Cleveland, Ohio. After arriving in Cleveland, Rolf Stoll continued to work as a commercial artist. However, in 1926, he joined the faculty of the Cleveland School of Art, where he taught drawing. Two years later Stoll was appointed head of the school’s portrait painting department. A talented portraitist, Stoll’s sitters included industrialists, community leaders and many prominent members of Cleveland and Ohio society, as well as over twenty faculty members from Case Western Reserve University. Stoll also gave portrait classes at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute from 1926 to 1953. In his male portraits especially, he was admired for his ability to convey the dignity of his sitter’s professional position without sacrificing individuality. As noted by one contemporary reviewer, Stoll was a “master of rich color, a searching student of human types, a forceful portrayer of all that the face reveals of the mind and the soul.” In addition to his activity as a portraitist, Rolf Stoll painted figure subjects and floral still lifes. He was also known for his views of the Ohio countryside and Canada. Stoll also painted views of Spain and depictions of Spanish peasants, inspired by an extended trip to that country (1926), during which time he was entertained by the famous Spanish portrait painter, Ignacio Zuloaga. Moving easily between oil and watercolor, Stoll worked in an direct realist style, combining his characteristic firm draftsmanship with the use of simplified forms and decorative color. Rolph Stoll was a member of the Cleveland Society of Artists, the Cleveland Print Club...

Famous Japanese woodcut artist Kitagawa Utamaro festival in the Yoshiwara

By Kitagawa Utamaro 1

Located in Fairlawn, OH

Kitagawa Utamaro (1750-1806) Wakamurasaki, Matsukaze ("Young Murasaki" and "Wind in the Pines.") Color woodcut, c. 1800 Signed in the block, Utamaro fude (see photo) Series: Seirō Niwaka Zensei Asobi ( "Popular Entertainment at the Niwaka Festival, Yoshiwara".) (Green Houses) is a poetic term for the pleasure quarters, specifically the Yoshiwara district."Niwaka" refers to amateur theatrical performances and parades held during the Niwaka festival Format: chuban Fresh colors and condition Housed in an 8 ply rag mat with OP3 Acrylic in a rounded corner Hackman 1" metal leaf frame Image size: 9 x 7 inches Frame size: 14-1/4 x 16-7/8 x 3/4" These are names of chapters from the classic 11th-century novel The Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari). The women in the print are likely performing a parody (mitate) or "modern" version of these classic themes. The print depicts two beauties in elaborate costumes, carrying umbrellas and flowers, typical of the processions held during the Niwaka festival in the Yoshiwara. Kitagawa Utamaro (1750-1806) Kitagawa Utamaro is highly appreciated as the dominating ukiyo-e artist of the late eighteenth century. Yet little is known about his life. Neither the precise date of Utamaro's birth, his birthplace, nor any substantial information about his parents are known. Utamaro’s original name was Ichitaro Kitagawa. It is generally agreed that he started his career as a pupil of the painter Toriyama Sekien. His early known works are actor portraits and theater programs, published under the name of Utagawa Toyoaki. In 1781/82 he changed his name to Kitagawa Utamaro. Around 1783 Utamaro started a successful cooperation with the publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo. Together they published several book illustrations. The early works of Utamaro were influenced by Torii Kiyonaga and Harunobu Suzuki...

Kandinsky, Abstract Composition, c. 1935, Posthmous 1st edition, Roethel 24B

By Wassily Kandinsky

Located in Fairlawn, OH

Composition Woodcut, c. 1935, printed 1966 Signed in the block lower left (see photo) This is the first printing of this image. Created in 1935, it was never printed during Kandinsky's lifetime. It is a POSTHUMOUS printing. Published by Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, Éditions XXe Siècle, Paris Issued in XXe Siècle, nouvelle série, no. 27, December 1966, Centenaire de Kandinsky Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Edition commonly reported as approximately 2,000 Condition: Excellent Image size: 9 1/8 x 10 15/16 inches Reference: Roethel 24b Created in 1935 but apparently left unprinted during Kandinsky’s lifetime, Composition was first issued posthumously in December 1966 in the Kandinsky centenary number of the Parisian art review XXe Siècle. The woodcut was printed from Kandinsky’s original block rather than reproduced photographically. It is therefore properly described as an original, posthumously printed woodcut—not as a reproductive print “after” Kandinsky. Contemporary documentation identifies the composition as having been cut by the artist in 1935 and first published by Éditions XXe Siècle in 1966. Publication details and dimensions The print belongs to Kandinsky’s final period, begun after the closing of the Bauhaus and his move from Germany to Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris, in 1933. Its vocabulary differs markedly from the romantic landscapes, horsemen and apocalyptic subjects of his early Munich woodcuts. The forms are now self-contained and biomorphic: circles, hooks, floating linear elements and irregular organic silhouettes coexist within an open field. Although nonrepresentational, they suggest minute organisms, astronomical bodies or signs belonging to an invented visual language. The black-and-white medium gives the image unusual clarity. Solid forms function like sustained musical tones, while thin lines, dots and isolated marks provide accents and intervals. Areas of untouched paper are equally active, allowing the components to float without conventional gravity or horizon. Kandinsky organizes these elements through visual tension rather than perspective: large and small, dense and open, curved and angular forms establish a rhythmic equilibrium across the sheet. The woodcut process was fundamental to Kandinsky’s development. Its demand for simplification encouraged him to reduce images to essential contrasts of shape, line and ground. Nearly two-thirds of his approximately two hundred prints were made between 1900 and 1911, and his increasingly abstract woodcuts for Klänge played a decisive role in his movement away from representation. MoMA’s Kandinsky printmaking overview In this late composition, Kandinsky returned to the medium with the more refined geometry and organic imagery of his Paris years. The circumstances of the 1966 publication are integral to the work’s history. XXe Siècle, directed by the Italian-born critic and publisher Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, regularly included original prints by major modern artists. Issue no. 27, entitled Centenaire de Kandinsky, commemorated the hundredth anniversary of Kandinsky’s birth. It contained two original Kandinsky woodcuts...
