Aliso Creek is a beautiful and unique feature of southern Orange County, California. Originating in the Santa Ana Mountains and flowing into the Pacific Ocean at Laguna Beach, it is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and artists alike. I was inspired to capture the beauty of Aliso Creek in a plein air painting. I set up my easel along the creek bed and began to paint, taking in the peaceful sounds of the water and the chirping of the birds. One of the highlights of the painting was capturing the presence of ducks swimming in the creek, even into the winter months. Their playful movements added an extra touch of life and energy to the painting. I also made sure to capture the scenic beauty of the surrounding landscape in my painting, including the lush greenery and sparkling water. The combination of natural beauty and man-made elements, such as the path along the creek and the bridge crossing, added depth and interest to the artwork. Painting Aliso Creek was a rewarding experience, allowing me to showcase the beauty of this unique and special place. I am proud of the artwork I created and hope it inspires others to appreciate the beauty of Aliso Creek and its surrounding landscape. Crystal Cove in Newport, California is a popular destination for plein air artists, known for its rustic setting along the 12-mile coast. The beach is surrounded by lush greenery and boasts crystal-clear water, making it the perfect setting for a painting. I was especially drawn to Crystal Cove for its unique combination of scenic beauty and recreational activities. Snorkelers and scuba divers can often be seen exploring the waters, and the beach is a popular spot for walkers and sunbathers. I enjoyed walking the beach, taking in the sights and sounds of this special place. The sound of the waves, combined with the salty ocean air, was invigorating and helped me focus on my work. One of the highlights of painting Crystal Cove was capturing the charming, old-world atmosphere of the beach cottages that line the shore. These cottages, with their weathered wood and colorful shutters, add character and history to the landscape and make for an interesting subject to paint. Thomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century.
Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own.
The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore.
