This heavy tin-lined French copper fish poacher, known as a turbotiere, dates to circa 1850 and was produced by the well-known factory for kitchen equipment, Maison Gaillard Paris. The turbot is a flatfish found in the Atlantic Ocean and this diamond-shaped poacher was designed to accommodate the shape of the fish, hence the name turbotiere. There is a production mark beneath the rolled rim which reads “Gaillard Maison”. A second production mark (“70”) can be seen beneath one of the large looping handles that are affixed by brass mounts with three rivets. The rivets combined with the dovetail seam on the bottom of the poacher attest to the age of production, as these were methods to assemble copper pieces prior to the late-19th century. Almost certainly originating as a full-body Buddhist monastery temple statue, dating to the 19th century or earlier, likely Tibetan or Nepalese, finely detailed throughout with special attention to realistic proportions, facial features and serene expression, depicted with slightly angular closed eyes, thin arched eyebrows flanking wisdom eye, elongated pierced ears, and traditional curly snail hair with cranial protuber-ance (ushnisha) rising from the top of the head, indicating his vast wisdom.

Acquired from the highly reputable auction house, J. Garrett Auctioneers, Dallas, Texas. Turtle Creek & Dallas Estates catalog.
Garrett was pleased to present the contents of a fine Turtle Creek estate. Property seized from JMJ Development, the Dallas development firm controlled by Tim Barton and set to become the first Mandarin Oriental hotel in Dallas.

A large and remarkable Japanese lacquer and marquetry decorated table or hanging cabinet, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan.
The cabinet of square form surmounted by an arched top with upturned scroll ends. Eight drawers of various shapes and sizes adorn the exterior of the cabinet. Doors on either side open to reveal interiors fitted with cubby holes over a single drawer.
The front of the cabinet is decorated with scattered geometric marquetry patterns of various design utilizing contrasting woods, including hardwood and burl, all in the yosegi zaiku technique.
The sides and top of the cabinet of black lacquer with maki-e lacquer painted designs of flowers and grasses. The back of plain black lacquer with two hoops for hanging.
The interior of the cabinet doors and the interior drawers decorated in the wakasa lacquer technique, with gold rhomboid accents against a polished black lacquer ground.
