About the Item

A well painted Chinese Canton enamel lobed round box and cover featuring the Eight Immortals, with a Qianlong mark to the underside, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China The delightful circular copper box and cover of lobed melon form and painted with a dense field of scrolling peony and chrysanthemum blossoms in beautiful famille rose enamels against a bright yellow enamel ground with white enamel ground reserves featuring the Eight Immortals and flowering branches. The main decoration to the lid features a large circular reserve depicting a gathering of the Eight Immortals seated in a lush clearing surrounded by rocky outcrops and gnarled trees. The Immortals are clustered around in two groups listening to Han Xiangzi play the flute, while Cao Goujiu keeps rhythm with his castanets. Lu Dongbin, the leader of the Eight Immortals stands behind them looking outwards, his sword by his side. In front of their group is Li Tieguai, his crutch laid out in front of him. Across from the first group sits Lian Caihe, with their basket of flowers, He Xiangu, the only female immortal, Han Zhongli, his belly exposed, with Zhang Goulao behind him massaging his shoulders. A triple border surrounds the circular reserve, comprised of a delicately painted ruyi head border, along with thin red and blue enamel borders. The body of the box divided into six lobes. Each lobe features a quatrefoil shaped reserve painted with blooms of chrysanthemum, peony, and plum. Each flower has special meaning in Chinese culture, with the chrysanthemum representing longevity, the peony representing wealth and honor, and the plum representing perseverance. A stylized lotus petal base decorates the bottom of the box, just above the raised foot.
