A young British writer (Bates) comes to Crete to find himself working at his father's mine. He meets Zorba, an itinerant Greek laborer (Quinn), and they take lodgings together with an aging courtesan, who Zorba soon romances. On the other hand, the writer is attracted to a lovely young widow. When she responds to him, the townsmen jealously attack her. Zorba teaches the young man the necessary response to life and its tragedies. Based on a novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. Masterpiece performance from Quinn. Beautifully photographed, somewhat overlong. The film was later written for a stage production.

“Renaissance invokes in us a sense of uncertainty and a self-awareness of our limits, of an infinity made apparent by the horizon line, the vanishing point, the moment in any spatial or temporal projection beyond which we can no longer see, but from which, nonetheless, we know the universe carries on. At the same time it poses a choice to us: do we accept the openness of abstraction or do we insist on imposing a (false) certainty of representation in what we see in these images. Hope is a faith made possible by uncertainty and the unknown, by an understanding that history and the future are creative acts, works of art in which we all participate.” Neal Rockwell

Henry Ford and Ford Motor Company revolutionized the automobile market again in 1932 by introducing the company's V-8 engine.
By casting the engine's block as a single piece, Ford decreased manufacturing costs and made the engine affordable to consumers. The venerable engine remained in production until 1953.
Other automobile companies had used V-8 cylinder engines for their heavy, expensive vehicles. But Henry Ford wanted a V-8 engine light enough and cheap enough to power an inexpensive car like a Ford. After years of work, the engine was introduced in 1932. The world's first low-priced, cast-in-one-piece V-8 engine.

Lathrop, the Children's Bureau's first director, soon commissioned several studies to investigate the causes and conditions of infant mortality. She wanted hard data to dispel the notions that child death was inevitable or an act of God, and to prove that infant mortality was not about genetics but rather environment.
Lathrop's research showed that children often died from infections and conditions that could be prevented. To spread the facts, the Bureau published a series of advice pamphlets on infant care.
Children's Bureau under Lathrop created a powerful, lasting legacy in the U.S. — the idea that every child has a right to a childhood.
"That every kid has a right to dependency," she says. "That they don't have to support themselves, and that the government is the parent of last resort if everything else fails."

Gerard Tsutakawa is best known for his numerous monumental corporate and public commissions throughout the Northwest US and Japan. One of his more recent iconic forms is found in his 'SeaWave' series, with the full-scale sculpture installed at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena in 2021. Here we have made available a cast bronze edition of the maquette of the already acclaimed public art sculpture. An edition of 20, this maquette is a rare opportunity to own a cast sculpture by the cherished Seattle sculptor!

Gerard Tsutakawa’s designs are a confluence of the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim.
