Duplex Apartment Combination

Apartment by Michael Haverland Architect in New York, NY

Like the townhouse typology in traditional cities, this duplex apartment combination in Greenwich Village was designed to support multiple habitation patterns over time. Both the 10th and 11th floors are connected by a steel and oak stair inspired by French 1940s furniture to create a townhouse in the sky.

The pre-war character is retained and details original to the building were painstakingly restored or found in salvage shops for genuine, not "new-old" replicated elements. Processes for aging brass and modifying standard mechanical systems were used to seamlessly fuse old and new as well as antique push button light switches and round central air conditioning ducts, arranged decoratively to define the crown detail.

Old library cabinets were salvaged and reused in the kitchen, along with porcelain enameled countertops with stainless steel details inspired by old diners and kitchen tables.
