Upper West Side Apartment

Apartment by Michael Haverland Architect in New York, NY

Commanding views of the Hudson River and the curving paths of Riverside Park informed the design and details of this apartment on the Upper West Side, fabricated with new technologies, including 3-D printing, and filled with sinuous furniture and lighting, largely sourced from 1st Dibs. The pattern of roads and pathways at the Park is abstracted and carved out of Corian with a computer-driven milling machine creating a three-dimensional “wallpaper” for closet doors. Custom concealed spring-loaded pulls disappear in the pattern. Door knobs were generated by a 3-D printer with a familiar look, but subtly custom ergonomic fit and precise scale— an intentional parody, with a twist. The white resin is clean and minimal, but a soft white and tactile. The material has inherent depth and softness. The cabinet pulls are fluid and dynamic like the Hudson River. The 3-D printing allowed the resin to be very thin and translucent. Important vintage pieces by Jean Prouve, Gio Ponti, Marco Zanuso, Poul Kjaerholm, and Mira Nakashima are mixed with art by friends of the client with many book shelves, adding warmth to the space.
